At around 5 p.m. today, two individuals, identified as Nlibe Otanpi and Balon Matthew (who claims to be an area coordinator for the NDC), were arrested by Immigration officers at the Sangba Inland checkpoint. They were found with two disassembled G3 rifles in a box, along with about 40 rounds of ammunition. The two, who were on separate motorbikes, attempted to bribe the officers with GHS 20 when the officers insisted on conducting a search of their box. The suspects immediately tried to flee after the officers rejected the bribe, but they were arrested following a chase. One of the suspects, Balon Matthew, who also claimed to be an area coordinator of the NDC, gave two different explanations for how they acquired the weapons. First, he stated that they had purchased the weapons from a military man, with each rifle costing GHS 25,000. He later claimed they obtained the weapons from his uncle in Accra.
