German Chancellor Merz on Iran War: The region must not slide into an eternal war with unclear goals. This war must be brought to an end with a clear plan, with a strategy. We are not participating in this war; we said that from day one. That remains the case for us. As long as the war continues, we will not participate in it with military means to ensure free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. To this day, we are not aware of any concept as to how such an operation could succeed at all. The United States of America and Israel did not consult us before this war either. Regarding Iran, there has never been a joint decision on the 'whether.' Therefore, the question of how Germany will get involved militarily here does not arise. We will not do it.

We don't see surrender anytime in the near future by either side, and so only a negotiated settlement gives us the opportunity to end this war." The problem with this, Marco, is that you are pressuring the victim of aggression to compromise its statehood instead of pressuring the aggressor to end its conquest.

And I wouldn’t blame them. I don’t trust the news coming out of my own government. So why should Iran trust diplomats? We don’t even send diplomats. We send Trump’s son-in-law and we send a friend of Trump and a real estate developer. So we don’t even rely on the professionals within our own State Department. But I think Iran is being prudent. Iran recognises, I think, as sane people do, that diplomacy is better than a forever war where tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people may end up dead. What’s so worrisome here is that we Americans, and our president…they all talk about short wars, they all talk about mission accomplished moments. ‘Oh yes, the war will be over in a few weeks, maybe a few months.’ We heard the same kind of rhetoric during the Vietnam War that, once we sent troops in 1965, that war would be over once American troops hit the ground. Well, that war stretched for another 10 years and we ended up losing that war. So this is always the rhetoric. And what I worry about the Iran war is that, yes, we’d like to think the war will be over soon, but we also thought the Russia-Ukraine war was going to be over in a matter of weeks or months and now it’s more than four years. So there's one timeline in which we go boots on the ground or try to actually go for the nuclear capacities or try to do regime change via boots on the ground. That is catastrophic due to the geography of Iran. It is surrounded by mountains. They have a bunch of people in the irgc who are very radicalized. There's also another path, another timeline, where we go for an off ramp and we start to back up. In that timeline, we are left with a regime that is more radicalized. So those are the two timelines. I don't care if we have some short term wins. The cost benefit analysis of this war does not make sense. We are losing troops, losing lives, losing money for two timelines are going to make the world more dangerous.
