.Dylan Patel lays out how we know the hard upper bound on how much compute can be produced annually by 2030: around 200 GW/year. That’s a crazy number (there’s about 20 GW of AI deployed in the world right now), but it’s nowhere near enough to satisfy Sam/Elon/Dario/Demis’s ambitions. Lots of things in the supply chain can be scaled up over 4 years, including things that other people think are bottlenecks, like datacenter power or fab clean room space. But the thing that’s inflexible over that timeline is the number of EUV tools. Dylan forecasts that production of ASML’s EUV tools will scale from 60 per year now to about 100 per year by the end of the decade - which means something like 700 total machines running in 2030. For a fab to make a GW worth of the Rubin chips that NVIDIA is deploying later this year, it needs to make 55,000 3nm wafers, 6,000 5nm wafers, and 170,000 memory wafers. Each 3nm wafers needs about 20 EUV passes, so about 1.1 million passes per GW. Adding on 5nm and memory, you need two million passes. Each tool can do 75 passes per hour, so with 90% uptime that’s around 600k passes per year - so a single machine can make less than a third of a GW in a year. So in 2030, we have 700 total machines, each making 0.3ish GW a year, which means we can produce 200 GW of compute a year. That’s a lot. But Sam Altman wants a gigawatt a week by the end of the decade. Anthropic and Google will be wanting about the same. And Elon wants to be putting 100 GW in space every year. Any one of these players could maybe get what they need, but not all of them.

MY NOSE BROKE… Again. As most of you know, I’ve broken my nose more times than I can count. The first major break was so severe the doctor told me it was one of the worst he’d ever seen. It required two surgeries just to put it back together, and I was strongly advised to never let it get hit again. I didn’t listen. It broke again. Another surgery. And honestly… it never healed the way it should’ve. Over time, the trauma caused scar tissue to take over, leaving me with a nose that didn’t function properly and didn’t look right either. Looking back at Alex’s posts, you could clearly see that he truly loved Jesus Christ. He genuinely loved God. He consistently spoke about God and encouraged people to draw closer to Him. And God never overlooks such things, every sincere step taken toward Him matters. And I believe that through the years of his sickness, he drew even closer to God and fully surrendered himself to Him. What many people do not understand is this… It can feel deeply painful when our loved ones die after years of sickness. But sometimes, in ways we may not fully understand, God can use suffering to humble a person and draw them closer to Him. Yes, they may still have died even without the sickness, but perhaps they could have died far from God, still living in their sins. The Bible teaches that God does not desire for anyone to perish, but for all to come to repentance and life in Him. Because of His love, He reaches out to people in different ways. Scripture warns us not to harden our hearts when we hear His voice. And that “voice” can come in many forms, through conviction, through challenges, through brokenness, disappointments, and even through sickness or difficult seasons. He uses different situations in our lives to humble us, break pride, soften our hearts, and draw people away from sin. The way He works is not the same for everyone. And many people, through weakness and suffering, come to truly know God and fully surrender their lives to Jesus Christ. So when such a person dies in faith, yes we mourn because we loved them and miss them deeply, but we can also rejoice knowing they were reconciled to God and have the hope of resurrection when Jesus returns. Sometimes we may not understand God’s ways and may even see them as harsh, but there are times when what feels painful in the moment is actually working toward an eternal good we cannot yet fully see. I believe Alex died truly knowing Jesus Christ. I believe he will be resurrected unto eternal life in Christ. And I strongly believe he is in a better place now. I thank God for his life because not everyone gets the opportunity to truly know Jesus and accept Him as Lord before their time on earth comes to an end. Rest well Alex. 🕊️
