Two new robot hands today, hours apart. Boston Dynamics built Atlas's like a machine: 4 fingers, 13 DoF, a motor inside every joint, no tendons, no pinky. Clone built its like a body: five fingers pulled by artificial muscles and tendons, laid out like human anatomy.

Clone says the hand in this clip is its last legacy design, built in April. Torso 4, due in November, was redesigned for simulation and control, the same thing BD built Atlas's hand around. Read more 👇 Atlas: Clone:

I think closest to a real hand will be the winner because it can use way more training data

Ok cool… how do we simulate the clone hand? How do we retarget a hand with five fingers to a hand with four fingers?

Hand is the new cool!

Two opposite bets on the same problem, hours apart: build the hand like a machine, or build it like a body. Hands are where robots meet the real world, so I'll be watching which approach gets used on real jobs first.

You can compare it with the new French biomimetic hand UM1-Evo

No pinky is the detail I keep coming back to. Someone had to sit down and decide which finger earns a motor.
