A student in Zurich sleeps in a camper van outside a hangar every night. Just to have more hours to build a humanoid robot. He’s obsessive. He's not alone. 2,500 students across Europe are getting into robotics right now. And now they united and just launched: ESRA, the European Student Robotics Association. 🇪🇺🦾 They are bringing together highly talented young people, give them space, give them resources and let them build. By now already 13 robotics clubs. 8 countries. 2,500+ students. I visited several of them over the last weeks to get to know them and let them tell their stories. We've also been helping behind the scenes where we can, because this is exactly what Europe needs. Several multiple billion dollar companies will come out of the ESRA network. Right here in Europe. If the Bay Area had a student robotics network like this, they would never shut up about it. Time we do the same. 😤🔥🇪🇺 It only needs a few crazy ones to fix a continent. Turns out they're already building. 🇪🇺

So cool! Can you even tell this is a robot horse? 🤖🐎 DEEP Robotics has built a robot horse, seemingly a special Year of the Horse limited edition based on their M20 Pro. The bionic details on this machine are incredible, especially those lifelike hooves. It looks like a living creature rather than just another quadruped robot. The US has Stanford, MIT, CMU… and they all know each other. Europe? Not so much. Until now: Students move between labs, compete in the same challenges, start companies together. There’s a shared culture. Europe’s biggest problem in robotics isn’t talent. It’s that nobody connects the dots. ETH has a phenomenal robotics scene. So does TU Munich. EPFL. TU Delft. But a student in Lausanne has zero visibility into what’s being built in Eindhoven. There’s no equivalent of the American pipeline where university robotics feeds directly into a startup ecosystem. Until now, apparently. ESRA a network of 11 student robotics clubs across 8 European countries. ETH, EPFL, TUM, TU Delft, TU Wien, KTH, Polimi, the list goes on. They’re organizing joint hackathons, sharing access to compute and hardware, and basically building the connective tissue that European student robotics has been missing. The part I like most: this wasn’t some EU initiative or university admin project. The clubs built it themselves because they got tired of waiting. 2,500+ students, zero bureaucracy. Shenzhen has an insanely dense robotics ecosystem. - It transformed from a small fishing village of around 30,000 people in the early 1980s into today’s global hardware epicenter with over 18 million residents. - The city is home to more than 1,200 robotics companies and tens of thousands of robotics-related suppliers and enterprises. - Thanks to this extreme proximity of engineers, factories, suppliers, and researchers (especially along Liuxian Avenue in Nanshan’s "Robot Valley"), hardware prototyping and iteration cycles can happen in days instead of months.

This is what open robotics actually looks like! 🔓 I was in Bordeaux, sitting inside Pollen Robotics, and had a chance to play around with their humanoid robot Reachy 2. It’s expressive, modular, and can even bring you coffee, and of course runs Python or Rust. I was talking with Reachy in 3 different languages, tele-operating it and manipulating kitchen stuff, and make it even mimic my gestures. The best part is that there are no locked APIs, or hidden stuff, just an open platform that you can build upon. The connection with Hugging Face makes it super easy to start, as the open source approach allows everyone to contribute, experiment and add their own things.
