The incident occurred near the Naval Air Station Lemoore in the central part of the state. The fifth-generation fighter jet was assigned to a squadron responsible for training pilots and other flight crew members. The crashed aircraft was an F-35C, designed for takeoff and landing on aircraft carriers. Its value is estimated at $100 million, according to CNN. The other variants — A and B — are used by the Air Force and the Marine Corps, respectively. The California crash is the second F-35 crash this year. In January, an F-35A crashed during a training flight in Alaska. The pilot also ejected.
