Two very interesting notes regarding this video and the IRGC military doctrine. First, unlike what is generally known, this current closure of the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian strategy is not unprecedented. Iran employed the same (successful) strategy during the Iran-Saddam War in the “Tanker Wars.” During that conflict,... the Americans brought dozens of their highly sophisticated naval vessels to the Persian Gulf to protect Ba’athist ships, and Iran clashed with them numerous times. Secondly, and most interestingly, as I elaborated before, the IRGC is the only conventional state army that was born and structured in the image of an insurgency (asymmetrical warfare), and the last book chapter I am writing now is analyzing this phenomenon. As this video shows, IRGC fighters — because they couldn’t face the American Navy with a conventional army and didn’t have enough resources — had to take fishing boats, install machine guns and RPGs on them, get close to the enemy ships, and attack from close range. They were basically gluing different ideas together to create new weapons. It was precisely these fishing boats and this creativity that led to the current IRGC “speedboats” we see today. This new weaponry was a highly effective form of asymmetrical warfare because of its high mobility, exploiting the enemy’s weakness against highly mobile boats. In other posts, I also showed how the IRGC mounted drones on the back of Toyota Hilux trucks as another form of unconventional warfare, which is indeed unique among all other armies in the world. It is this type of creativity that gave us victory. As Shahid Imad Mughniyeh said, we are in a far weaker position compared to the enemy in the military sense, but “we have creativity, therefore we are victorious.”show more
