Ai Day last week was a blast! I had a great time presenting alongside many colleagues from InstaDeep and BioNTech SE, some of our ongoing Bio+AI initiatives. We made several announcements, introducing Kyber, our new supercomputing cluster (more on this soon), as well as BFN, our new paradigm for generative AI, with competitive results on protein and antibody generation. During Ai Day we also delivered two live demos of Laila, our new AI agent, including one from BioNTech's TechLab in Mainz, Germany! To our knowledge, this was one of the first demos of its kind featuring a GPT-4 level AI agent acting in the Lab, interacting with scientists and technicians and helping them enhance their productivity! Ai Day was a significant moment for all of us, and it was exciting to see both the event and Laila featured by several publications including Financial Times ( Curious to see it in action? In two predawn operations today, the Coast Guard conducted back-to-back meticulously coordinated boarding of two “ghost fleet” tanker ships— one in the North Atlantic Sea and one in international waters near the Caribbean. Both vessels —the Motor Tanker Bella I and the Motor Taker Sophia—were either last docked in Venezuela or en route to it. Under President Trump’s bold and visionary leadership, US Coast Guard tactical teams worked closely with its counterparts at the Departments of War, Department of Justice and State and used their specialized expertise to conduct these operations and conduct two safe, effective boardings within hours of each other. One of these tankers, Motor Tanker Bella I, has been trying to evade the Coast Guard for weeks, even changing its flag and painting a new name on the hull while being pursued, in a desperate and failed attempt to escape justice. The heroic crew of the USCGC Munro pursued this vessel across the high seas and through treacherous storms— keeping diligent watch, and protecting our country with the determination and patriotism that make Americans proud. [WATCH] ON THE MIGRATION MATTER At the end of June, forces under an anti-immigrant banner set out to shut down parts of our country and to sow mayhem. Let us report plainly: they were contained, and the shutdown they promised did not break the back of the Republic. But there was a cost to the good name South Africa has built since 1912. The organisers and funders must understand: they are eroding our standing as a safe home for the tourist and the investor, and isolating us from our own continent and when South Africa stands alone, it will not succeed. We see the patterns for what they are: the agent provocateur, the cheap mob politics of the ballot-chaser, and the poison of ethno-nationalism that would break this country apart. The enforcement of our laws is the work of the State, and of no one else. The authorities have effected some seventy-two thousand deportations of persons here unlawfully — diligent work, yet still under a tenth of the estimated total, a presence that does depress the wages of our workers and the tax base of our services. And we direct a firm word to the employer: the one who knowingly hires the undocumented to work them harder and pay them less is not only breaking the law that employer is depressing wages, starving the fiscus, and sabotaging the economy and the peace of our communities. The exploiter of cheap and unlawful labour is as much the author of our tensions as any smuggler at the border. To our own people we say: be wary of the radicalisation trap. Do not be drawn into public disorder and vigilantism, which earn you a police cell while the true causes of your hardship go untouched. Take your grievance to the ballot, not the streets. For the pressure at our borders is, at root, a continental crisis of economies under strain, of conflict, and of climate shock. A continental problem asks for a continental answer. It is for this reason that the ANC today places before the nation the Continental Compact on Migration in Africa, published in full on our website at where every South African may read it.
