President Donald J. Trump is right to end birthright citizenship by executive order on Day One. We are one of a handful of countries in the world that allows birthright citizenship. In other words, if you’re born in the United States, you’re automatically an American citizen. This and birth tourism from developed countries like China have become one of the biggest magnets for illegal immigration. I have introduced legislation to end birthright citizenship, and I am now working on a constitutional amendment to end the practice. I believe legal immigration is important to our economy and future. However, birthright citizenship and birth tourism are strong magnets for illegal immigration and cheapen American citizenship. I look forward to working with President Trump to go beyond his executive order and end this disastrous policy once and for all.

We’ve lived under the legal myth for decades that anyone born on U.S. soil automatically becomes a citizen. The idea that foreign terrorists or criminal gang members can cross our border and gain citizenship for their children by default is absurd, and it undermines the rule of law. And now we have a Supreme Court that thinks it can block the President of the United States from expelling these known terrorists from our country. That’s not just unconstitutional, it’s dangerous. Trump is correct. Birthright citizenship was never meant for the children of illegal aliens… The child of a foreign diplomat, who is in this country *legally*, doesn’t even get it. The 14th Amendment says: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, AND SUBJECT TO THE JURISDICTION THEREOF, are citizens of the United States." That second part is the key. It was never intended for illegal aliens to be able to cross our border at 7 months pregnant and create a US citizen with benefits for life. It also wasn’t meant for illegal immigrants to get pregnant while in the country illegally, as thousands in NYC shelters are purposefully doing right now, and create a US citizen as an “anchor”. It was written in 1866, before our current, globally connected world. It needs to end.
