#WATCH | Draft UGC (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment & Promotion of Teachers and Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulations, 2025 released. UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar says, "Faculty members are the backbone of our universities and colleges. So, when we select and promote them, we need to evaluate them holistically. In the earlier regulations, we were driven by quantitative evaluation such as the academic performance indicators. Whereas, in the new regulations that we are bringing out in the draft regulations, there are many opportunities that we are creating to the faculty members. Earlier, if somebody had an undergraduate degree and PhD, they were not eligible to be appointed but now these new regulations provide that opportunity. So, there are 3 qualifications that we are providing for the new entrance into the universities and colleges. Those with undergraduate degree and PhD or a master's degree and PhD can apply without writing the UGC-NET. But those candidates who have a master's degree in non-professional programs such as Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences have to clear UCG-NET to be eligible to become Assistant Professors. But candidates who have an engineering master's degree, such as ME and MTech, they don't need to write UGC-NET and they can directly apply for Assistant Professor positions in Engineering and technology programs..."

We should be empathetic and we should stand by our students. But most importantly, NTA, within a few days of cancelling the NEET examination, has announced the new date for the retest of NEET and it is going to happen on the 21st of June...Most importantly, the Union Minister of Education has made an important announcement that, next year onwards, NEET will be conducted in the computer-based test mode...We need to strengthen organisations like NTA. In situations like this, when an examination is cancelled, when we are distressed, it is natural to criticise the NTA as an organisation. Deputy Prime Minister /Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar Ishaq Dar chaired a Committee meeting to review the existing Guidelines for the Establishment of Universities and Higher Education Institutions in Pakistan. The committee reviewed the draft 2026 HEC Regulatory Framework for the Establishment and Accreditation of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Pakistan, in the light of direction given by the committee in the last meeting .The revlevant stakeholders provided a detailed briefing to the Committee about the work they have carried out in this regard. The committee appreciated the efforts of the Higher Education. DPM/ FM directed HEC to incorporate further recommendations provided by this committee in today’s meeting and submit the revised draft to the Ministry of Federal Education for onward submission to the Federal Cabinet for approval. DPM/ FM while highlighting government’s commitment towards quality education stated that strengthening Pakistan’s higher education system and impartting knowledge through highest standards of quality, transparency, and excellence is the hallmark of this government. The Meeting was attended by Ministers of Law , IPC and Education and Professional Training, SAPM Tariq Bajwa, Federal Secretaries, HEC team , Rector NUST senior government officials and relevant stakeholders.

#WATCH | Delhi: On the new regulation of UGC, BJP MP in Rajya Sabha and Chairman of Bar Council of India, Manan Kumar Mishra says, "It is not good to drag educational institutions into controversies...A controversy has been broiled which was not needed at all. There are strict laws against ragging. But what I suspect, and what people are not saying openly, is that after these regulations, educational institutions will become centres of controversy. The students might belong to any caste, they are there to study and they have been given the scope that be it anything, even if there is a petty fight - file a complaint and spoil someone's life. So, there was no need for this. I feel that this should be reviewed by the UGC...Government should also think about this..." (27.01.2026)
