I would describe the difference between socialism and fascism a little differently though: socialism is the short but necessary period of government control needed to achieve communism, fascism is government control with no desire to achieve communism. Both are big government, a concept that is abhorrent to the right.

One was universal socialism intended for the entire planet. The other was national socialism intended just for the German people, or in Mussolini's Italian fascism, just for the Italian people.
