I am over 50. I remember my father explaining them to me when I was a child. He was an RAF pilot in the 1960s. They are just ice crystals. Sorry to burst your illusion. 60 years is not "a couple". There are more now due to air passengers doubling about every 15 years*.

The contrails I recall as a kid and young adult would dissipate in minutes. These spread out and link up with other, evenly spaced ones.

They should really play with the sheep and come out and say that they have completed a study and realised that the contrails are formed by extra co2 in the atmosphere and now we have 33 months maximum to live unless we pay … maybe 20% more tax?
