Ukraine’s First All-Robot Assault Force Just Won Its First Battle | David Axe, Forbes That Ukraine even needs so many unmanned weapons points to a deep manpower shortage. A Ukrainian national guard brigade just orchestrated an all-robot combined-arms operation, mixing crawling and flying drones for an assault on Russian... positions in Kharkiv Oblast in northern Russia. “We are talking about dozens of units of robotic and unmanned equipment simultaneously on a small section of the front,” a spokesperson for the 13th National Guard Brigade explained. It was an impressive technological feat—and a worrying sign of weakness on the part of overstretched Ukrainian forces. Unmanned ground vehicles in particular suffer profound limitations, and still can’t fully replace human infantry. That the 13th National Guard Brigade even needed to replace all of the human beings in a ground assault speaks to how few people the brigade has compared to the Russian units it’s fighting. The 13th National Guard Brigade defends a five-mile stretch of the front line around the town of Hlyboke, just south of the Ukraine-Russia border. It’s holding back a force of no fewer than four Russian regiments. That’s no more than 2,000 Ukrainians versus 6,000 or so Russians. The manpower ratio is roughly the same all along the 800-mile front line of Russia’s 34-month wider war on Ukraine. Russian troops still greatly outnumber Ukrainian troops, despite the Russians suffering around twice as many casualties as the Ukrainians since February 2022. The Ukrainian operation involved remote-controlled flying surveillance and minelaying drones, one-way explosive robots on the ground and in the air as well as gun-armed ground ’bots. In what amounted to a smaller-scale proof of concept for the recent combined-arms robot assault, a Ukrainian ground robot cleared a Russian trench in Kursk Oblast in western Russian back in September. Russia has attempted small-scale ground ’bot assaults of its own, but less successfully. The problem, of course, is that while robots are adept at surveilling and attacking, they’re terrible at holding. To hold ground, armies put infantry in trenches. They sit, watch, wait and call for reinforcements when the enemy attacks. It’s tedious, taxing duty that requires constant vigilance. Constant vigilance is difficult when a human operator is remotely observing the battlefield through the sensors of a maintenance-hungry ground robot. Machines break down. And their radio datalinks are highly susceptible to enemy jamming, as the California think-tank RAND discovered when it gamed out a clash between hypothetical U.S. (“Blue”) and Russian (“Red”) army battalions partially equipped with armed ground drones. “Blue’s ability to operate was degraded significantly by Red’s jammers,” RAND concluded. It’s not clear the 13th National Guard Brigade even tried to hold the Russian positions it cleared in the all-robot attack. Read more:show more

On the Kostiantynivka direction, a ground robot evacuated a wounded Ukrainian Defender under Russian fire. Ukrainian soldiers from the Liut Brigade were caught in an enemy ambush. Russians opened heavy fire, and one soldier was seriously wounded. Despite this, he continued to withdraw on his own, firing back at the enemy. The brigade noted that evacuating the wounded soldier was extremely difficult: enemy drones were constantly circling above their positions, and any movement under fire could be fatal. Using the weather conditions, namely thick fog, the enemy made a push in the direction of Ukrainian positions, hoping that our drones would be “blind.” The Russians did not take one thing into account: during the enemy’s assault actions, the newest ground robotic reconnaissance complexes were standing in their rear, detected the Russian columns, and transmitted the coordinates, which made the equipment a prime target for our FPVs. His units took part in attempts to breach Ukrainian defenses in the same area. Both were dismissed for a "lack of results." Large-scale infantry and mechanized assaults involving dozens of armored vehicles failed to deliver operational success and did not result in a breakthrough of Ukrainian positions. The only outcome achieved by the occupation commanders was significant losses in personnel and equipment. Since August of last year, when the First Corps Azov of the National Guard of Ukraine assumed its designated defensive sector on the Dobropillia axis, the enemy has lost nearly 23,000 troops killed and wounded. Losses in heavy armor alone amount to 100 tanks and 263 armored combat vehicles. The removal of two Russian generals from their posts is an acknowledgment of the failure of the enemy’s tactics on the Dobropillia axis. But this is not only their defeat — it is also our victory. It is the result of the actions of the Defense Forces of Ukraine engaged in this sector of the front, who have demonstrated their effectiveness through coordinated operations and professional command leadership that developed and implemented the defensive strategy. However, they should immediately understand one thing: the Dobropillia axis is a place where Russian soldiers and officers are constantly being killed — and where the careers of occupation army generals come to an end. A relatively new so-called "biker tactic" has emerged among Russian forward units. This is partly because the Russians' stocks of heavy military equipment have been partially depleted, and they have much less capacity to form a column of tanks or armored combat vehicles than they did last year or at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. But this is also due to the Russians' search for new tactical methods of organizing "meat assaults." ◾️ The Russians are actively equipping their assault (forward) units with light vehicles and motorcycles, trying to strengthen their ability to quickly and with minimal losses overcome the so-called "kill zone" (the area between the positions of their and Ukrainian troops, where the bulk of the firepower of the advanced units of the AFU, including FPV drones, as well as the fire of the bulk of their artillery and mortars, is concentrated). ◾️ According to the Russian command, with the massive use of individual motorized means by assault infantry, the number of targets that Ukrainian firepower needs to hit increases many times over. ◾️ Also, the Russian leadership believes that high-speed and maneuverable motorized means dramatically increase the chances of survival of an attacking/assaulting unit by significantly reducing the time spent by its personnel in the "kill zone." ◾️ The Russian command believes that in this way, the Ukrainian defending unit simply "will not have time to strike" each such fast and agile "biker," especially when they sometimes become more or less numerous. ◾️ Based on this, Russian units involved in attack/assault operations are equipped with motorcycles, ATVs, and buggies. The AFU is also effectively adapting to these Russian tactics, increasing statistics of killed and wounded Russians. This video was filmed near Toretsk. Russian soldiers attached flags to the motorcycles in honor of May 9 and launched an assault. The motorcycle rally ended in a complete defeat. The assault was repelled by the joint efforts of the 12th Azov Special Operations Brigade as part of the 1st Azov Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine and the 49th Carpathian Sich Separate Assault Battalion.

But this is also due to the Russians' search for new tactical methods of organizing "meat assaults." ◾️ The Russians are actively equipping their assault (forward) units with light vehicles and motorcycles, trying to strengthen their ability to quickly and with minimal losses overcome the so-called "kill zone" (the area between the positions of their and Ukrainian troops, where the bulk of the firepower of the advanced units of the AFU, including FPV drones, as well as the fire of the bulk of their artillery and mortars, is concentrated). ◾️ According to the Russian command, with the massive use of individual motorized means by assault infantry, the number of targets that Ukrainian firepower needs to hit increases many times over. ◾️ Also, the Russian leadership believes that high-speed and maneuverable motorized means dramatically increase the chances of survival of an attacking/assaulting unit by significantly reducing the time spent by its personnel in the "kill zone." ◾️ The Russian command believes that in this way, the Ukrainian defending unit simply "will not have time to strike" each such fast and agile "biker," especially when they sometimes become more or less numerous. ◾️ Based on this, Russian units involved in attack/assault operations are equipped with motorcycles, ATVs, and buggies. The AFU is also effectively adapting to these Russian tactics, increasing statistics of killed and wounded Russians. This video was filmed near Toretsk. Russian soldiers attached flags to the motorcycles in honor of May 9 and launched an assault. The motorcycle rally ended in a complete defeat. The assault was repelled by the joint efforts of the 12th Azov Special Operations Brigade as part of the 1st Azov Corps of the National Guard of Ukraine and the 49th Carpathian Sich Separate Assault Battalion.
