The heating situation in Kyiv is critical - 4,200 apartment buildings are currently without heating, and it will take weeks to restore heating in some of them. In the first month of 2026, there were 723 reports of power outages, 552 reports of heating outages, and 513 reports of water outages. A total of 1,778 cases were publicly reported, compared to 983 in January 2025. Belgorod (143) and Murmansk (105) regions and the Krasnodar Krai (138 cases) are among the leaders. Residents go without water for weeks, melting snow to obtain it; they store food from defrosted refrigerators outside, live in apartments where the temperature is only 10°C, warm themselves with gas stoves, and stock up on generators. The key reason is equipment deterioration. Deterioration of networks in Russia has reached an average of 40%, and in some regions as high as 80%, leading to frequent breakdowns. At the same time, only 2% of the infrastructure is renewed annually, although twice as much is needed just to halt deterioration, Russian officials say. In Desniansky district, a very densely populated residential area, there is no heating. A lot of residents had less than 30 minutes of electricity in the past two days. Large tents are installed in the district so people can spend nights in relative warmth and have some hot food. However, for many elderly people leaving their apartments is virtually impossible without an elevator. Social services do their best to deliver hot food to them once a day. The long and harsh Ukrainian winter continues. Russia is already planning new attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
