The financier of "Monster" (2003) had no idea what movie they were making. He thought he was making a "hot Charlize Theron, Christina Ricci, lesbian love, sex movie". One night, he called Charlize Theron who was also the producer of the movie, after seeing some of the dailies, he told her that she looked terrible & wasn't smiling enough at the camera. She went on to win the Academy award for "Best Actress" in 2004. Here is Charlize Theron talking about it: “I turned it down, I’m only in that film because Patty Jenkins, the writer and director, wouldn’t take no for an answer … she was relentless.” “I felt like the script was so good that if you were going to do it, you had to do it visually, in a way that felt authentic to who she was, and I didn’t know if I could do that” To transform her body to better match Aileen’s, Charlize had to gain several pounds, which meant she could eat just about anything she wanted. “It’s a f**king free-for-all. It’s amazing,” she said. Because of Quentin Tarantino's insistence, she had to learn 3 styles of Kung Fu, Two styles of sword fighting, knife fighting, Knife throwing, Hand-to-Hand combat & Japanese. Uma Thurman thought it was absurd. She felt that her body type was opposite to those who excel these arts. Her being tall (5 ft. 11 in.) was a disadvantage for her. The first time Thurman swung the 10-lb. samurai sword her character uses in K!ll Bill's climactic duel, she hit herself in the head and nearly burst into tears. She lied to herself that, "Obviously Tarantino sees this is going to be impossible for me, and he'll figure out a way to fake it.'" Instead Tarantino told her to suck it up. "Before this movie," he says, "Uma's way of training was to smoke half a pack of cigarettes as opposed to a pack, all right? She started the training 30 lbs. overweight from the baby, and she was really intimidated, but no way were we going to use quick cuts or CGI. Not in this movie." By the third week of her 3 month training with master Yuen Wo-ping, Uma Thurman learned to treat the fight sequences like dance choreography, and things began to click.
