Umar Khalid has been in jail since 14 September 2020. He has not faced trial. He has been denied bail, again and again. In this video, Umar’s friends read out excerpts from a piece he wrote from inside Tihar Jail for The Quint. From referencing Dostoyevsky’s The House of the Dead to telling the story of a prisoner who spent 29 years in jail without parole, Umar Khalid writes about hope, despair, and what it means to live between life and death.

Former Supreme Court judge Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia speaks up on bail denial to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. "I am disappointed with the judgement (bail denial to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam). Supreme Court has misinterpreted K.A. Najeeb's case. In the K.A. Najeeb case, Supreme Court granted him bail considering that there are over 200 witnesses and there is no possibility of completion of trial in the near future. So, the possibility of completion of trial has to be considered along with the period of incarceration. In this case, there are 900 witnesses. But this part has not been touched upon by the Supreme Court."

Recusal of a judge of the Supreme Court sitting to hear a presidential petition is not tenable. The rule and the previous custom and practice has been that the bench of SEVEN must sit as a whole. So Judge Katwat Kigen’s recommendation that he can recuse himself during a presidential petition is not founded in law. Recusing himself during the presidential petition would seriously affect the quorum of the court, thus rendering it inoperative. This means that the Supreme Court would never have the jurisdiction to hear the petition. Now think about his proposal politically.
