The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Sen. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, , has congratulated Mr. Mohamed M. M. Fall on his appointment as the new United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nigeria. During a visit to Minister Bagudu's office in Abuja, Mr. Fall expressed his commitment to supporting Nigeria's development initiatives through the UN system. Minister Bagudu welcomed Mr. Fall's enthusiasm and pledged the government's continued collaboration with the UN. "We are committed to sustaining dialogue and collaboration with the UN as we work towards achieving our economic and development goals," said Minister Bagudu. Mr. Fall, a Senegalese national, has extensive experience in international development and humanitarian affairs. He previously served as the UN Resident Coordinator in Malawi and has held various leadership positions within the UN system. The UN Resident Coordinator is the highest-ranking UN official in Nigeria and is responsible for coordinating the activities of all UN agencies, funds, and programs in the country. Delighted to be a part of 'CSR for Change: Accelerating Scheduled Tribes Development through CSR Partnership', initiated by the Tribal Development Department, Government of Maharashtra, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). In Maharashtra, approximately 9.5% of the population belongs to tribal communities, contributing to the state's rich cultural heritage and well-developed society. Both the State and Central Governments are continuously working towards their progress and development, with a strong focus on education, healthcare, nutrition, and livelihood. Stunting and wasting remain significant concerns among tribal populations. We are actively addressing these challenges through sustained efforts aimed at improving nutrition, healthcare, and overall well-being. Additionally, we are strengthening the education system to facilitate better learning opportunities and uplift these communities. CSR plays a crucial role in introducing flexibility, leveraging technology, and bridging gaps in government initiatives. In Maharashtra, CSR contributions have made a remarkable and lasting impact on tribal communities. Together, we can drive meaningful change in healthcare, nutrition, and education. Notably, Maharashtra receives the highest share of CSR funding, reflecting strong collaboration and commitment. We deeply value our partnership with the United Nations Development Program. Yesterday in Marondera during the Presidential Borehole Drilling scheme official unveiling, citizens expressed a clear and compelling vision: their focus is on development, not elections. This sentiment reflects a growing recognition that sustainable progress is achieved through investment in infrastructure, services, and livelihoods rather than prolonged political contestation. Having lived in the United Arab Emirates, I have witnessed firsthand how a nation can achieve remarkable transformation by channeling its energy into development. The UAE has built world-class infrastructure, diversified its economy, and elevated the quality of life for its people — all with limited emphasis on electoral processes. Their model demonstrates that when governance is anchored in delivery and efficiency, citizens benefit directly. For Zimbabwe, the message from Marondera is instructive. Communities are calling for reliable water supply, modern infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. These are the foundations of dignity and prosperity. Elections are important in any democracy, but they should not overshadow the urgent need for tangible progress. Policy must therefore prioritize development as the central pillar of governance. Excellencies, Distinguished Delegates, It is an honour to address this Biennial Summit. We gather at a moment when the 2030 Agenda is in peril. It is estimated that we need to close a financing gap of $4 trillion annually if we are to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals. A succession of crises has exposed the fragility of our interconnected economies and revealed deep inequities in our capacity to respond. While some nations are able to mobilise trillions to shield their citizens and economies from pandemics and other emergencies, others are left constrained by debt and denied fair access to global capital. We should use this Summit to push for the full implementation of commitments made across various forums – from the Financing for Development process to the #G20 and Climate Change COP. We must strengthen coordination between the UN, the African Union, the G20, international financial institutions and other global financial actors, embedding inclusivity at the heart of global economic governance. To close the SDG financing gap, we need to undertake the following bold measures: Firstly, we need debt relief and restructuring that is faster, fairer and more comprehensive. Secondly, we need to mobilise affordable, accessible financing from a wide range of sources. Thirdly, we need to rechannel unused Special Drawing Rights to countries in need. Fourthly, we must scale up concessional finance through development banks. Lastly, we must reform global tax rules to curb illicit financial flows Beyond financial instruments, we need confidence that commitments will be honoured and that global rules will be shaped by all members, not just a few. Let us forge a new compact for financing sustainable development rooted in solidarity, equity and mutual accountability. South Africa stands ready to ensure this Summit becomes a turning point in our collective effort to build a sustainable, inclusive and resilient global economy. I thank you. #UNGA80 🇺🇳
