UNBELIEVABLE - OUR YOUNG CANNOT READ CURSIVE - Really - This is almost unbelievable. BUT - Then they may not be able to read type written words either - We keep reading articles that say students can't read - How do they expect to succeed in life? What has... the Teacher's unions and "woke" teachers done to our children - They have concentrated on things that only cause our children to have a need to protest and other things that make no difference in this world. It's true - too many times students can't read or write when they graduate high school - First of all - I want to know how they graduated and have learned nothing about anything that will help them succeed in life.show more

People are skeptical that teachers don't know their students can't read. Yes, teachers know students can't decode words. But teachers have been taught that words aren't necessary for "reading". Here's a teacher teaching kids to "read" by looking at pictures. In fact the word they're "reading" is covered up so the students can't even see it! And listen to how she describes it at the end of the video: "reading and analyzing text"

We teach our students entrepreneurship from a young age. This is an annual flea market where students bring their used toys, books and anything they don’t want to school to sell to their fellow schoolmates and even teachers. Before the market starts, we teach them how to advertise, price, negotiate and give change. This way, they can learn the art of buying and selling, get rid of things they don’t want and have fun. These are practical skills and knowledge that we should also give our children in Nigeria. Not all of them, but some of them will find their calling in business and can start at a young age. Our teachers have an instrumental role to play in teaching them, encouraging them and gaining other skills other than just teaching students what is in text books. The online world now is providing more opportunities to do business, and kids should be in this action. It will sow seeds for our future business ecosystem and add more value to our economy.

Up to 20% of Americans are dyslexic, according to an estimate from the American Psychological Association, and Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) believes the federal government should take on a larger role in helping identify dyslexia in children from an early age. "If 20% of the children learn to read differently and we are not accommodating the difference in how they learn to read, then they're going to be stuck, and we lose that social capital," Cassidy told Margaret Brennan in an interview Thursday. How do we help learners find a pathway to success that is meaningful to them? Too often, “success” is determined by others for our students, but everyone reading this right now could consider themselves successful, but have very different measures on what that means to them. If I don’t have a say on what success looks like to me, why would I care about getting to someone else’s destination? This is something I have been thinking about a lot since I was the opening keynote at #NAGC23 this past week, and how I emphasized the importance of focusing on bringing out the gifts in EVERY learner we serve, including our adults. We can’t bring out the best in our students if we only focus on the deficits of what we do as adults in education. It is imperative that we don’t just “value” people but that people feel valued. There is a difference in those two ideas. Here is a question I have really been focused on over the last few years; Do our students walk out of school all good at the same thing, or do they all walk out knowing they are good at something? Not everything that is important to bring out the gifts in our students can be easily measured, but not all things that matter can fit into nice and neat metrics. Helping learners find their own gifts within education ensures that they are more likely to find that pathway to success that matters most to them. NAGC
