India achieved a historic milestone by producing 1 billion tonnes of coal in the last financial year. In addition, coal production and supply have witnessed steady improvement and growth, with reserves sufficient for the next seven years, owing to several reforms undertaken over the past decade under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji. The emphasis on coal gasification is a continuation of these reforms, aimed at integrating advanced technologies in coal production and utilisation. This approach seeks to significantly reduce import dependence and bring down import bills across key sectors, including crude oil, ammonia, coking coal, aviation fuel, and urea, among others. #LokSabha

JUST RESIGN He’s at it again. Blackout Bowen has been caught red handed peddling lies and deceiving the Australian public. He’s just posted a video asserting; "Just recently for example, renewables overtook Coal as the largest source of electricity for India". This is blatantly false. The largest source of electricity produced in India comes from coal at 74.56 %. Renewables (of which Hydro power is the largest) don’t even come close. Further, India’s Ministry of Coal, is planning to increase India’s annual coal production by 500 million tonnes over the next five years to 1,500 million tonnes (by comparison Australia’s total coal production is around 390 Million tonnes) Either Blackout Bowen is hopelessly out of his depth, and doesn’t have a clue what he is talking about - or he is deliberately trying to deceive Australians. Either way, his position as Minister for Energy is completely untenable - he should resign.

In the Rajya Sabha today, I addressed key questions on coal exchange, coal gasification, and mine closure reforms. Under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Government of India has brought greater transparency and efficiency to the allocation of coal blocks through open auctions. Today, nearly 73–74% of India’s power generation comes from coal-based thermal plants, with around 80% of the coal produced being supplied to the power sector. Critical industries such as cement, steel, and fertilisers also depend heavily on coal. India holds the world’s fifth-largest coal reserves, sufficient to meet our needs for the next 60–70 years. We are further strengthening this position by accelerating exploration activities. Today, India is the second-largest coal producer globally, and Coal India Limited remains the largest coal-producing company in the world. We have also made significant progress in coal gasification, with projects worth over ₹64,000 crore underway. Highlighted that there are two types of gasification — surface and underground. We are actively advancing surface gasification, while underground gasification technologies are being carefully studied. I will share further updates once these are finalised. On mine closure, 143 coal mines are currently undergoing scientific closure processes. Dedicated nodal officers have been appointed for each site, with oversight committees led by respective district collectors. These efforts are focused not only on environmental sustainability but also on generating employment opportunities and ensuring a just transition for affected communities. Watch here:

Coal Gasification will help India produce ethanol, methanol, diesel, petroleum products, and fertiliser inputs like syngas domestically, reducing import dependence and strengthening energy security. In this direction, the Government had earlier launched the first phase of the Coal Gasification Incentive Scheme with an allocation of ₹8,500 crore. Under this phase, 8 projects have already been sanctioned, with work on nearly 4 projects already underway on the ground. The remaining projects are also progressing rapidly. Further strengthening this mission, the Union Cabinet has now approved the second phase of the Coal Gasification Incentive Scheme with an outlay of ₹37,500 crore. In a short span of time, the coal ministry worked extensively to prepare the guidelines and bring the complete details of this incentive scheme before stakeholders. The speed and efficiency with which this initiative has moved from Cabinet approval to implementation reflects the decisive, reform-driven, and action-oriented governance of the Narendra Modi government.
