So Tia Ho asked her… What’s the deal with pop music right now? “The influence of hyperpop has become super big,” she says. “You can hear it in most... of the alternative pop songs right now. It’s really sick. I would have been so geeked about the radio when I was like 15 if this is what was going on.” U points out that “all of the kids who were raised with unrestricted internet access” have grown up and they’re pulling from a much more broad range of influences. If I’m being honest, I feel like I was avoiding this video. It’s been a weird start to the year. I was going through a bit of a weird time with [Warner]… it’s a whole thing. 🙏🏿 this is the stuff of beautiful dreams really🙏🏿 I first met MamLetta almost 30yrs ago officially at a dinner to launch a place they called “Back of the Moon” here in Jozi. All the legends were there, I mean all of them, and little me of course. I was always in rooms I was too small to be in but felt so at home there. I chased her down a passage and sang “Tristeza”, telling her it was my favourite of her songs. She was shocked that I not only knew her music, but that I know that song in particular. She has an astounding discography and her kindness and gentle mentorship have carried me through the 30 sum years I have been in this business. She influenced everyone. She was literally in every corner of the globe. Even in Japan she did cars and candies commercials. This was pre-socials media and she was still omnipresent. That type of Star power doesn’t exist anymore! She ruled the world with a wave of her hands 👸🏼 I respect her soooo much because she did that at such a young age in the physical era of music. She did that where people actually went out to buy her music. Nobody at her age had such a cultural impact. Streaming platforms kinda ruined everything if u thinking about it. Because they distorted the perception of a real success and impact of an artist. Today’s kids don’t know a third of what the Britney Spears phenomenon was. She’s basically the formula, the industry before her was one thing, after her it was another in every aspect! Mind you, the mid tik tok dancers y’all praise doesn’t even have the 3% of her iconicness, fame and impact she had in pop culture. She sold 150 million records in PURE SALES and ORGANICALLY without internet, socials medias and streaming platforms, she’ll always be an icon & despite her life and retirement her music is STILL charts, being spun, sampled & trends on socials networks. And literally the 80% of the music industry is trying to emulating what she did. Britney will always be a reference, the blueprint, the buisness model. She changed the music industry and impacted generations of singers. Period.

I was wondering if that was influenced by B.I, and also what kind of discussions you went through to place that kind of music in each scene. Director: Music Director B.I actually already has a personal connection with Actor Jo (Byeong-kyu), which I mentioned earlier, they worked on a music together. I was introduced to him. When I first met him, he was already someone who had created many works with a distinct personal world of his own. He also has deep understanding of film and the script. When I showed him early edits where I had already laid in some music, he would take in my opinions while also bringing out his own style. Overall, I wanted the music in “Boy” to include a wide variety of genres, techno, pop songs. Having that kind of mix not only makes it more fun to watch, but I also felt that it matched the emotional tone of “Boy” very well.

So the discourse around this Dave Ramsey clip is so mixed up that I’ve just decided to upload the whole thing. In the full context of the call, the caller makes it perfectly obvious that: 1. She has been with this man, whom she is now living with, for six years. 2. She is a nurse and can make her own money. 3. She has been out of school for two years, and in that time she has paid off $70,000 of the debt. In the course of the call, Dave never suggests that this man should have to pay for that debt. Indeed, he actively suggests that she leave him, which guarantees he will not pay for the debt. Dave also all but says that, because of her career choice, the caller will be able to pay for the debt on her own, even if she has to take extra hours. All Dave is saying—and this should have been obvious from the original clip—is that the two are not aligned on money and debt at all. It is also clear that Dave thinks the man is stringing her along, which he is. So they simply should not be married at all, because this is a fundamental failure in the relationship. I myself would add that, at this late stage in the relationship, if you do not trust a woman financially, you should simply not be with that woman. And that is perfectly fine. But what you do not do is drag her along for six years when she obviously wants to get married, and then put another two or three years of financial hoops in front of her so that maybe you will propose. It is a waste of everybody’s time.

Jeffrey Sachs: The old world leader, the United States, has been matched and, in many ways, overtaken by China. And I think we all feel that it’s not a temporary phenomenon, but really the end of US-led geopolitics, and even more fundamentally, the end of Western-led geopolitics. Our governments, in most places—with the exception of China, from my perspective—are not able to govern right now. The United States is probably the most incapacitated government of any major government. We’ve got a nut as president, just to be blunt about it. I’d like to be blunt because there are very few opportunities for adult conversation, which we need. We just need a real understanding. So, we have a president who is out of control, really, but we don’t really understand how the US government works right now. And everyone I know who interacts with Trump says that he has an attention span of a few seconds, basically, and is a complete ignoramus. And this is in the middle of a war that we’re in. Nobody knows how to deal with the United States because no one knows what’s really going on, what the relations are. It’s all the more unnerving because we have to fake everything as if we’re in a normal situation. So no matter how weird it gets, everyone says, “Oh yes, this is very interesting. We’re going to continue our diplomacy,” even though it’s a madhouse. The breakdown of US governance, the loss of US power, and the mindset reaction in the US are the main drivers of chaos in the world right now. I don’t even know whether they can de-escalate anymore because they’re so crazy. This is just the madman and the tantrum that’s coming with it. The answer would be for the rest of the world to act like grown-ups. Kaja Kallas tweeted, “Iran is an evil country that must be brought to bear,” the day that they were attacked by the US and Israel. Again, nobody dared speak the truth. Nobody speaks the truth right now. So, this is a very deep governance crisis on top of everything else. My prescription is that we behave like grown-ups again. Netanyahu is a real psychopath, without question. And they’re completely out of control. The only thing—if you want to say anything—is what Mr. Sachs said: governments should talk truthfully about the situation so that we have a chance to actually address what is the most serious crisis of global governance since World War II.

AI music and image creation is nothing short of incredible. Even with what we have now. Been playing with Udio and it produces professional grade music, albeit with a bunch of bugs right now. I'm just dreaming of how much better it'll be in a year or two. Imagine putting in a song you really like from a video game or movie or something and extending it, making new generations based on the leitmotif, etc.

I was listening to a sermon recently from one of my favorite teachers, Tim Keller, who sadly passed from this earth earlier this year. He was talking about the power and meaning of the words “Peace On Earth”. I was deeply encouraged and challenged to consider the significance of those words, particularly what they meant when announced by the angels 2000 years ago, and what they mean to us in 2023. As I was reflecting on all of that in light of what’s happening in my life personally with family and friends as well as in the world as a whole, I started thinking about a song I wrote a few years ago with my friend Tom Douglas called “A Desperate Benediction (Peace on Earth)” and suddenly found myself rewriting some of the words of this song, specifically related to right now...Christmas 2023. I’m not even sure as a songwriter what the rules are on this kind of a thing, but I felt strongly that I wanted to share it with you…So here you go. Peace on Earth, Christmas 2023.
