While the technology holds enormous promise for restoring mobility in paralysis, treating neurological disorders, and eventually enhancing cognitive function, it also carries substantial risks. Beyond typical surgical complications like infection or inflammation, lesser-known concerns include glial scarring (where the brain encapsulates the foreign material, impairing signal quality), long-term degradation of electrode materials in the brain’s moist, dynamic environment, and neuroplasticity-related unpredictability, where the brain may reorganize itself around the implant in unintended ways. There's also a critical bioethical concern: if cognitive augmentation becomes feasible, it may exacerbate inequality and raise questions about identity, consent, and the definition of what it means to be human. Neural data security and the potential for “neural hacking” are also emerging areas of concern, as direct brain access introduces unprecedented privacy vulnerabilities.
