Terry, #Venezuela is not Iraq. Until Chavez and Maduro, it had the strongest democratic traditions of any Latin America country, w/decades of peaceful transfers of power. It is a fairly homogeneous country, long allied with the U.S., that does not have deep religious divisions.

Antonio, Those are hopeful facts to distinguish Venezuela from Iraq. My concern is with US democracy. The idea that Presidents can on their own initiative attack any country in the world and take it over without any input from Congress is insane to me. Constitutional vandalism.

I’m concerned as well. I just don’t see how this operation could have, in practice, been OK’d by Congress. The U.S. needs clearer rules on POTUS power, bc even Democratic presidents going back to Carter have engaged in comparable actions without approval.

@TerryMoran No, Andrew. Much as I welcome the action against Maduro and believe it was legitimate, the legal framework for the operation is relevant. Many things make the U.S. the world’s greatest country, but one of the most important is respect for the rule of law.
