We as a country has shown commitment towards conservation by building largest mitigation measures for wildlife. Existing highways through sensitive habitats need to be prioritised.

A 23-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death with an iron rod and a young woman had sustained critical injuries in a shocking assault in Hinjawadi on Thursday as the police are suspecting the attack was triggered by a dispute over a romantic relationship. The accused is identified as Dinesh Mahadev Jhambare (23), a resident of Palshi in Pandharpur taluka who was arrested within hours after police had intercepted his vehicle on the Pune–Solapur Highway when he was allegedly attempting to flee towards Pandharpur. According to the police, Jhambare and the injured woman had reportedly been in a relationship since their school days. Both later moved to Pune for higher education. Investigators says that the accused had suspected that the woman had developed a relationship with another student at her educational institution which led to growing tensions. Police said the accused then allegedly went to the residence where the woman and the victim were staying on Thursday. An argument reportedly broke out after which he is accused of attacking both of them with an iron rod. The male victim suffered fatal head injuries and died at the scene and the woman had sustained serious injuries and was rushed for medical treatment. Soon after the incident, police received the information that the suspect had escaped in a vehicle and was heading towards Pandharpur. Acting swiftly, the Uruli Kanchan police set up checkpoints along the Pune–Solapur Highway and intercepted the vehicle and took the accused into custody after a coordinated operation. The motive behind the crime is believed to be linked to the accused’s suspicion over the woman’s alleged relationship with the deceased though the investigators are still continuing to verify all aspects that are linked to the case. Police have launched a detailed investigation into this murder, and further legal proceedings against the accused are in process. The identity of the deceased and the injured woman has not yet been officially disclosed.

Ardnacrusha hydroelectric station yesterday evening, when ESB was abstracting almost 70% of the flow in the Lower River Shannon Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Water is diverted at Parteen Regulating Weir, and this abstraction affects over 15kms of internationally designated Natura 2000 river. ❌This is not “clean energy” and it is not “powering Ireland”, despite ESB’s claims. As seen in the video, much of the water taken from the SAC is simply being dumped through the spillway rather than used for hydroelectric generation. ⚠️This is a critical period for fish migration. Upstream migrating Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and River Lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis) are following this diverted water into the tailrace, where they become trapped and are unlikely ever to spawn. Both species are Qualifying Interests of the SAC. ⚠️Downstream migrating critically endangered eels also follow the water into the unscreened turbines. Eels are also likely to get harmed if they pass though this 30m high spillway. They will also be exposed to 'gas supersaturation' in the tailrace and injured and disorientated fish are very vulnerable to predation. ⚠️The white screen on the station visible in the video is related to an ongoing multi-million-euro refurbishment, carried out entirely outside the planning system with no environmental assessment. Water management decisions are being made day-to-day and have varied significantly in recent years. ⚠️The water management ‘plan’ for this station is new, the refurbishment ‘project’ is ongoing, and both are having significant effects on the environment and the Lower River Shannon SAC. These impacts are cumulative with the impacts of the 1920s scheme and required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Appropriate Assessment (AA). ⚠️Salmon runs on the River Shannon have collapsed, and the entire SAC is being damaged by the unsustainable management of this hydroelectric scheme. The refurbishment was a major opportunity to implement mitigation measures to protect endangered fish, yet nothing was done. However, the key ecological problem on the Lower River Shannon is the over-abstraction of water. No fish pass could ever work with the situation shown in this video for example. ❌The current management of this hydroelectric scheme is incompatible with the legal requirements of the EU Habitats Directive and the Water Framework Directive. ✅What is needed is a formal SAC management plan for this Natura 2000 river, one that balances electricity generation with biodiversity, fisheries, flood risk management, and the needs of local communities.

After the killings of 5 National Park personnel by bandits last week, which I broke the news, I carried out an investigation to see the level of compliance at the Old Oyo National Park where lithium mining activity is going, then i discovered the said mining has become a full blown community. The current number of illegal miners operating at Old Oyo National Park is estimated to be between 200,000 and 400,000, including individuals involved in buying and selling activities at the site. According to my research , there is nothing sold outside the illegal mining site that is not also sold within the site. Items sold include foodstuffs, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and various forms of hard drugs. There is also the presence of sex workers who render their services to illegal miners inside grass huts constructed within the area. Additionally, medical drugs and medical items such as needles, injections, and intravenous fluids are openly sold at the site. Explosives are also sold to illegal miners and are used for blasting lithium during excavation. There are thousands of blacksmiths on site who fabricate various tools used for illegal mining activities, including shovels, diggers, chisels, and hammers. There is a high rate of child labour at the illegal mining site, also known as Daba. These children are used mainly for sorting lithium from rocks. The illegal mining site is divided into two sections: the Yoruba illegal mining section and the Hausa/Fulani illegal mining section. Both sections are located within Old Oyo National Park. The road leading to the illegal mining site (Daba) is not motorable. Access to the site is only possible by motorcycle. All extracted lithium is transported by motorcycles to Bonni, Igbeti, or Soro in Kishi. This indicates that illegal miners access the mining site through Igbeti, Kishi, and Bonni. As at the time of writing this report, many empty trucks are observed entering through Igbeti, Oyo State, heading directly to Bonni, and passing through Bonni to Jeba Oloru, Kwara State, from where the lithium is transported to destinations of their choice. They operate within the confines of laws established by the illegal miners’ chairman, popularly known as “CD.” Anyone who commits the crime of stealing is punished by death. The area is so enclosed that outsiders can be fished out by them. A bike man who carries lithium from the forest to the truck earns ₦12,000 per bag. One bag of lithium weighs 100kg, and they carry two bags, making 200kg. The miners are so familiar with the area that they can easily move to Igbeti, Kishi, and Bonni in Kwara State from the forest while evading security forces without being noticed, because many of them have been living in the forest for more than three years without seeing the outside world. It is imperative that both the Kwara State Government, Oyo State Government, and the Federal Government get hold of this before it becomes a security problem for the whole country.
