The golden rule is about doing what's morally right for nothing else other than it's the right thing to do. It's about altruism, not about getting something in return.

I treat people how they treat me, though doing this guarantees people will think you're a dick.

You all need you some Jesus Christ. This is the most basic tenant of morality, and no, morality is not just following the rules. WTF is wrong with you people? Have you all lost your souls. Doing unto others as you would have them do unto you is simple goodness, nothing more.

I was lucky, but this makes me think my wife was not. She's always worried about my happiness, which I love, but it does affect us because she often times won't let me do things to make her happy. Thankfully she's doing what she always wanted to now

Omfg… just treat people as good as you can in the moment. Stop over-thinking it, participate in community and stop expecting a level of respect from strangers. Accept that you aren’t the centre of their world, because you’re not even the centre of your own world half the time.
