Elon promises AGI paradise where work becomes optional, but Mouse Utopia already delivered that in 1968 with infinite resources and every mouse died anyway. What killed them might kill us too. In 1968, psychologist John B. Calhoun built a "rodent paradise" with 256 nestboxes, unlimited resources, and no disease. He introduced four breeding pairs and watched them thrive. At first. Population doubled every 55 days. Social structures formed and everything looked normal. Then the crowding hit. By Day 315, defeated males gathered in the center. They were fighting, biting, and purposeless. Stressed mothers abandoned their young and infant mortality spiked to 96%. Despite unlimited food, the social fabric was tearing apart. Phase D was the behavioral sink: - Two-thirds became withdrawn outcasts - One-third turned hyper-aggressive - Females grew violent toward pups Then came the "Beautiful Ones." These are the males who spent entire days grooming themselves, ignoring mating or territory defense entirely. (incels or looksmaxxing guys today) They were physically perfect. But psychologically, they were destroyed. Births ceased. The last generation never learned social skills, and the colony went extinct. Calhoun concluded: "The death of their spirit preceded the death of their bodies." The main problem was lack of purpose. Let's make some parallels today. Elon Musk predicts AI + robotics will create "universal high income" which is an economy so abundant that work becomes optional and material needs vanish. He calls it an "infinite money glitch." But the question that immediately comes to mind is: "What do people do with all that extra time?" AGI would give us Mouse Utopia at scale. It would give us unlimited resources, zero material struggle, and every physical need met. And if you think you won't experience AGI in your lifetime, well, think again. Look at the current data: > High-income nations report 15% lifetime depression rates vs. 11% in poorer countries > North America leads the world in "deaths of despair", i.e. overdoses, alcoholism, suicide among young adults ages 25–34. > U.S. fertility dropped from 2.1 (replacement rate) in 2007 to 1.6 in 2023. > Young men increasingly withdraw into gaming, isolation, disengagement, the modern "Beautiful Ones." Every previous revolution (farms > factories > computers) displaced labor but humans moved up the skill ladder. AGI threatens to replace every cognitive task. When machines think, create, and plan as well as we do, there's nowhere "higher" to go. For the first time in history, innovation might eliminate human necessity entirely. If you make Power BI reports, I think you might enjoy stepping outside of Power BI to experiment with coding agents and dataviz libraries like Vega, Altair, or d3.js. Here's an example of a dashboard I made with FitBit data. While making the pbir-cli (testing starts this week, thanks to everyone who showed interest!), we learned a lot. Chiefly: we've found it's really, really hard to get an agent to work well with Power BI reports!! Power BI reports are built around abstraction and different intersecting layers. Themes, metadata, extensions, the model... all of it built for a low-code SSBI experience (clicky-clicky-draggy-droppy). That's fine for you and me (mostly). For a coding agent, though, it's inflexible... maybe even hostile. Even with the right tools and context, you simply can't get a Power BI report to reliably do _exactly_ what you want; it's just not meant for that. If you experiment a bit with Vega, Altair, or d3.js... you'll see what I mean; the contrast is pretty clear. This isn't necessarily a bad thing; unlimited flexibility may lead to inconsistency, and there's creativity in constraints. But still, I've been wanting to explore visualization without these constraints... My experiments beyond Power BI reports have been interesting and given me a lot to think about. The most promising approach so far: viz-as-code with custom embedded visuals, pulling from local or remote data sources. This stepcount dashboard is one such example... made in just a few hours between other tasks. Materializing a dashboard like this from natural language wasn't really viable a year ago. Project out another 12–18 months and it's certainly difficult to imagine what the future looks like... That said, reports and dashboards in an enterprise context aren't just visuals. Governance, distribution, integration, etc... years of individual and organizational investment. All of that makes change have a speed limit; we won't be plugging in custom embedded dashboards, overnight. But if you're curious, I do think it's a good investment to step outside Power BI and experiment. Investments you may even be turned into custom visual designs, anyway :). As Havens Consulting put it recently to me: it's time to multiclass...

The project will not go live until next week and anything stating otherwise is a scam. 🚨 TLDR: On August 24th I’m releasing an inclusive edition generative project called Heart + Craft, in collaboration with Jordan Lyall, on Prohibition.art, priced at 0.01 ETH. Heart+Craft represents a lot to me. It represents an artistic style and medium that I have expressed since 2014. It represents my present curiosity towards demonstrating value for NFTs beyond scarcity, FOMO, and promise of future value utility. And it represents my vision of a digital optional / physical optional future that I believe can be appealing to a broader consumer audience. Heart + Craft illustrates the potential of art and creativity driven generative goods. On the surface, Heart + Craft is a colorful generative artwork that illustrates my eternal love of gradients, contained in the shape of a heart. There are seemingly unlimited possible combinations of colors and blocks that make up each (Zelda inspired) heart container. But beyond the digital object there is potentially also a physical object, and whether you value the digital or the physical more is entirely up to you. Similar to the concept behind the Friendship Bracelets project, created alongside Alexis André, each Heart + Craft iteration contains detailed instructions for producing a physical analogue. And similar to the bracelets, the value of the digital is not diminished if it is ever separated from its physical counterpart. With this project I’m particularly excited about a lot of things including: The intent that rarity is mostly a function of the complexity of assembling the physical sculpture. The idea that this project could inspire people to take a break from our increasingly digital world, diverting attention to making something tangible that lives in their physical space. The opportunity to spread love and good vibes with a relaxing experience, like building a puzzle, that can lead to personal satisfaction while contributing to a more positive and colorful world. The ability to explore new distribution mechanisms for our digital objects via inclusive editions such as developing kits that come with cubes, paint, glue, and the digital ownership certificate all in a beautiful box. Creating goods where digital objects can inspire a love for craft, and a craft that can catalyze curiosity and foster education for digital objects. Offering a low cost and disarming entry point for new consumers into our space through a project that can be enjoyed as a family, or be gifted to tech/art curious friends, clients, and coworkers. Having another opportunity to perpetuate the beautiful spirit of charitable giving culture that occupies our space by donating a portion of the proceeds in support of the arts. The project will not go live until next week and anything stating otherwise is a scam. 🚨 TLDR: On August 24th I’m releasing an inclusive edition generative project called Heart + Craft, in collaboration with Jordan Lyall, on Prohibition.art, priced at 0.01 ETH. Heart+Craft represents a lot to me. It represents an artistic style and medium that I have expressed since 2014. It represents my present curiosity towards demonstrating value for NFTs beyond scarcity, FOMO, and promise of future value utility. And it represents my vision of a digital optional / physical optional future that I believe can be appealing to a broader consumer audience. Heart + Craft illustrates the potential of art and creativity driven generative goods. On the surface, Heart + Craft is a colorful generative artwork that illustrates my eternal love of gradients, contained in the shape of a heart. There are seemingly unlimited possible combinations of colors and blocks that make up each (Zelda inspired) heart container. But beyond the digital object there is potentially also a physical object, and whether you value the digital or the physical more is entirely up to you. Similar to the concept behind the Friendship Bracelets project, created alongside Alexis André, each Heart + Craft iteration contains detailed instructions for producing a physical analogue. And similar to the bracelets, the value of the digital is not diminished if it is ever separated from its physical counterpart. With this project I’m particularly excited about a lot of things including: The intent that rarity is mostly a function of the complexity of assembling the physical sculpture. The idea that this project could inspire people to take a break from our increasingly digital world, diverting attention to making something tangible that lives in their physical space. The opportunity to spread love and good vibes with a relaxing experience, like building a puzzle, that can lead to personal satisfaction while contributing to a more positive and colorful world. The ability to explore new distribution mechanisms for our digital objects via inclusive editions such as developing kits that come with cubes, paint, glue, and the digital ownership certificate all in a beautiful box. Creating goods where digital objects can inspire a love for craft, and a craft that can catalyze curiosity and foster education for digital objects. Offering a low cost and disarming entry point for new consumers into our space through a project that can be enjoyed as a family, or be gifted to tech/art curious friends, clients, and coworkers. Having another opportunity to perpetuate the beautiful spirit of charitable giving culture that occupies our space by donating a portion of the proceeds in support of the arts.
