Hundreds of millions of gallons of waste has spilled into the Potomac River causing extreme levels of bacteria. On January 19th, crews noticed unusual activity in security cameras monitoring an odor control facility along the C&O Canal. Upon inspection, they discovered the break. A failure in a section of a 72-inch sewer pipe, known as the Potomac Interceptor, resulted in the release of hundreds of millions of gallons of raw sewage into the river. It’s considered the largest spill of wastewater in U.S. history. As of February 10, 243 million gallons have entered the river. Progress, which could take months, slowed on Sunday due to significant use during the Super Bowl. DC Water CEO David Gadis called the spill “deeply troubling.” An analysis of the water by the University of Maryland (UMD) and the Riverkeepers found "high levels of fecal-related bacteria and disease-causing pathogens" - which they say raise "urgent public health concerns." The only comparable sewage spill occurred in 2017 along the U.S.-Mexico border, when roughly 230 million gallons of wastewater were released. NOTE: It still smells horrible.

Search and recovery organization Equusearch arrived and was dumbfounded about the girl's disappearance. The Houston Fire Department then inspected multiple pipes in the pool and couldn't find anything. The officers on the scene then went into the hotel and reviewed camera footage, which showed the girl submerging under the water but never resurfacing. They then drained the pool and stuck a pole with a camera on the end about 20 feet down a pipe in the pool where they found the girl. Her hand was the first thing that appeared "wedged" deep inside the pipe. According to investigators, the pipe malfunctioned and instead of pumping water out, it was sucking it in. "Many of us had to wipe tears from our eyes," said Equusearch founder Tim Miller. "I never, ever thought in a million years it was going to end up as bad as it ended up...there is a grieving family out there, and it is going to be a long, painful healing process over this one."
