Until recently, Craig Mokhiber was a top U.N. official working on human rights. He just left his post with a scathing resignation letter blasting U.N. and Western complicity in Israeli abuses. Mokhiber joins Democracy Now! to talk about the current war in Gaza and more.

@CraigMokhiber The story did not begin on October 7th. It's began and continued decades ago, when “Israel” began occupying Palestine, leading to Palestinian displacements, land confiscations etc. This is occupation and the struggle against it, which is guarantees by the International law.

@CraigMokhiber Great interview. Craig makes a crucial point about international law set for all conflicts yet when it comes to Israel/Palestine this conflict always seems to sit outside of the rules. Where is the action on the part of the UN 🇺🇳 Security Council? They go missing at this point.

Serious Rupture in Franco-American Friendship? U.S. marches out on the French in protest On SubStack United Nations. The U.S. calls French remarks “politicized drivel ( and walks out of the U.N. Security Council while they speak. And just like that, after scores of speeches throughout France and the U.S. on July 4 about the 250 years of alliance, the good will between Washington and Paris appeared to take a dramatic turn south. The setting of the walkout was a meeting of the 15-nation U.N. Security Council meeting on July 27 on Ukraine when France’s Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont spoke, referring to Washington’s “disingenuous grandstanding.” The ‘beef’ was about the vote on the previous Friday afternoon that extended the current U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights’ term – which France supported and the U.S. did not. Ambassador Dan Negrea ( the Representative of the United States to the United Nations Economic and Social Council and Alternate Representative of the United States to the Sessions of the General Assembly, told Council members that “there is a member of this Council that will feign moral outrage and pretend to lecture the rest of us about every topic, whether it’s about the very conflict we’re discussing yet again today, or even those unrelated to international peace and security, like human rights.” “That is why we walked out during France’s intervention,” Negrea said. Before the vote, U.S. Ambassador for U.N. Management Reform Jeffrey Bartos ( called on states to vote no saying that the High Commissioner has guided the U.N. human rights apparatus “to its deathbed.” The public display of discord began after the Friday vote in which the U.S. joined nine other countries in the General Assembly – in what was ultimately a failed effort to stop the reappointment – to vote against Turk. But after the vote, France’s delegation in Geneva (where the human rights divisions are based), posted a no-holes-barred response, saying, “The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore….” adding the hashtag “#AmericaAlone.”
