On Monday 26 May, thousands of people lined the streets to celebrate the Liverpool FC parade. What should have been a day of celebration for the city turned into a day of fear and anguish after Paul Doyle drove his car into a crowd, injuring more than 100 people. It is only by sheer luck that nobody was killed as a result of Doyle’s reckless actions. This video shows Doyle’s aggressive and dangerous driving before he reached Water Street, audio from his dashcam, and footage of his arrest. This has been one of the most extensive investigations in the history of the force. Over the past seven months, we have supported 134 victims, spoken to more than 1,500 witnesses, and gathered in excess of 700 statements. In the initial stages, more than 70 officers and staff were dedicated to this investigation, including colleagues from across Merseyside Police and neighbouring forces - Greater Manchester Police, Cumbria Police, Lancashire Police, Cheshire Police, and North Wales Police. We are extremely grateful for their support and collaboration. Today, Doyle has been sentenced to 21-and-a-half years in prison at Liverpool Crown Court, after pleading guilty to 31 offences on Wednesday 26 November. I was in the crowd and understand the fear triggered by that vehicle entering the demonstration— for a split second, my mind jumped to Nathaniel Veltman and David Zegarac. That said, let’s approach the situation analytically. My $0.02: This incident unfolded in the wide pedestrian area in front of the Superior Court of Justice, across from the US Consulate. The sidewalk was mostly clear, with the exception of the speaker standing in the middle, as shown in this extended cut of footage. The Kubota tractor was accompanied by a pickup with a plow driving on the road. With other tractors operating on sidewalks elsewhere downtown that night, it appears drivers were practicing routes ahead of heavy snowfall. There was space on the sidewalk for the tractor to pass, but the driver could have braked. Based on her now-uncovered social media history, it’s not a stretch to imagine she seized an opportunity to startle or scare protesters. The tractor’s blue lights were flashing and it was beeping. It moved slowly enough for people to step aside, but not slowly enough to allow dawdling. Protesters did not step aside. Quite the opposite. The general sense of entitlement reflected in chants like “Whose streets? Our streets!” and directives to “Take up space” played out in real life. Newly released video shows a Southwest Airlines pilot taken off a plane and arrested for DUI. On January 15, 2025, at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, Georgia, Southwest pilot David Paul Allsop (52, Bedford, NH) was arrested for DUI before co-piloting Flight 3772 to Chicago Midway. TSA agents smelled alcohol during crew check-in around 6 a.m. and alerted police. Allsop admitted to drinking “a few light beers” the night before (at least 10 hours earlier) and claimed any odor was from nicotine gum. Officers confirmed the alcohol smell. After initially refusing, Allsop performed field sobriety tests on the jet bridge and failed two of three (swaying on one-leg stand and issues with horizontal gaze nystagmus). He refused a voluntary blood draw. He was arrested under Georgia’s “less safe” DUI law, handcuffed, removed from the plane, and released after posting $3,500 bond.
