In my view, his staff simply needs to hold out until October, when the Senate leaves Washington and does not return until November 6. By then, based on Kentucky law, it would be too late to call a special election to replace Senator McConnell. If that happens, I believe McConnell will remain in office, with him and his staff continuing to collect their paychecks until the new Congress is sworn in in January.
