Chief Magistrate Abert Asiimwe, overseeing the exercise, began the recount at around 7 pm on Friday and by Saturday had spent more than 20 hours declaring results from different polling stations. To speed the process, Asiimwe constituted two teams to handle counting and tallying, based on the city’s two divisions. By press time (7:30PM), about 35 percent of votes had been processed. The recount follows a court order granting Justin Namere of NRM a challenge to the January 15 election of Rose Nalubowa of NUP, who had initially won with 25,443 votes against Namere’s 20,324. Namere claimed irregularities in 11 of Masaka City’s 314 polling stations. The court allowed votes from most polling stations to be recounted but excluded one station where a ballot box lacked a seal. Another station, Kimwanyi P7, was disregarded after it was found to contain 97 votes for Namere alone.
