Update on terrorist attack at synagogue:

- Police have been working around the clock gathering evidence on the evil anti-Semitic attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue. That sickening crime has now been declared a terrorist act.

- The investigation now moves to the joint counterterrorism team – a joint team run by the Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police - which brings with it stronger powers.

- The increased police presence and patrols that were in place over the weekend in the community – in vehicles and on foot, out and about at synagogues and other sites of significance – is continuing.

- I am seeking immediate advice at how we can strengthen the laws to protect Victorians who go to their place of worship and who practice their faith.

Because everyone has the absolute right to do so in this city and state, safely and without fear. There are a range of options that are available to us to ensure that right is reflected in law.

The peace at Adass Israel was shattered on December 6. The Jewish community is grieving. Our thoughts must be with them. And so must our actions.
