A mountain lion sighting caused a buzz in a Santa Monica neighborhood on Friday as police temporarily closed off some areas and urged residents to remain indoors while authorities worked to capture the big cat. The mountain lion was eventually tranquilized by a biologist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, police said. The big cat will be evaluated and if healthy, it will be collared and released into the "nearest suitable habitat within the Santa Monica Mountains." Read more:

On Sunday, California Department of Fish and Wildlife brought 3 orphaned mountain lion cubs to Oakland Zoo’s vet hospital. The trio, estimated to be about 3 months old, were found in Portola Valley. CDFW believes the mother of these cubs is the same female mountain lion that was killed by a car in the same area. The three siblings (2 males and 1 female), are thin but relatively healthy. Their care team at our veterinary hospital has given them the names Thistle, Spruce, and Fern (Fern is the female). In the wild, mountain lion cubs need about two years with their mother in the wild to learn survival skills. Because these cubs are so young, they lack those skills and sadly cannot return to the wild. Instead, we will work with CDFW to find these cubs a new forever home at an appropriate institution. While they are with us, we will take great care of these orphaned cubs, and, we will continue to take action to reduce human-wildlife conflict and make our shared living spaces safer for all animals. ALERT: Mountain lion filmed killing a family's 2 dogs in broad daylight after jumping over a fence and bringing them to its den not far from homes in Yucaipa, California. The Schultz family says they were on vacation in Northern California when they saw security footage of a mountain lion jumping over a fence on their property before mauling their dogs, Winter, a 90-pound husky and Summer, a 65-pound Anatolian shepherd. Roger Shultz says, “This mountain lion, who we have on video, even came back and took the shepherd out and carried her away … This was an unprovoked attack, and the dogs were targeted.” The mountain lion then dragged one of the dogs away. The dogs had tracking devices, which led them to a cave near a residential area. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says, “The department recommends residents take preventative measures to protect their pets and livestock from predators.”
