According to the emerging version, GUR personnel went to 10 Yuriya Shumskoho Street intending to detain SBU officers who had allegedly previously taken Kaplunov. Though there is no official confirmation, it is being widely reported that the background is that the SBU kidnapped Stepan Kalpunov, one of the commanders of the so-called "Russian Volunteer Corps" (a small media/military unit consisting of exiled Russian neo-Nazis), for unknown reasons and GUR attempted to free him (as the RDK is officially a military unit attached to GUR). The SBU tried to downplay the whole thing by issuing a statement claiming that the whole thing is a "joint operation" between SBU and GUR trying to save Kalpunov (only naming him as a "Russian opposition leader") from a Russian assassination attempt.
