YouTube is moving to an exposure-based model for views across all formats, meaning a view will now be counted the moment a video begins to play - from the very first frame Last year, YouTube moved to an exposure-based model for Shorts views. This year, starting August 24th, YouTube will be expanding that model to long form, podcasts, live streams - all formats YouTube is doing this to ensure consistency across the platform, to make sure every moment of connection between creator and audience is captured, and so that there’s no confusion or fragmentation around what a view means Creators can use this updated, standardized count to better understand views across formats, and to better communicate the full scale of audience impact to brand partners and sponsors. And viewers will know when they see a view count, it’s all based on that same model - from that first frame All new videos uploaded after the change on August 24th, 2026 will show the updated first-frame view count. All videos uploaded prior to the change will keep their existing view count up until the change - historical view totals will not be updated retroactively - but following the change, new views on those videos will follow the updated first-frame count To compare performance more consistently before and after the change, creators can used the engaged views metric in YouTube Studio An engaged view means the viewer stayed to watch past the first frame and initial seconds. It’s how all views were counted historically, which is why they’re useful for historical comparisons Engaged views will also remain the view metric used to qualify for Shorts ad and premium revenue sharing in the YouTube Program, and for monetization and revenue calculation across all videos

No, it’s about artificially inflating view counts to swindle advertisers into investing on the platform and into specific creators. All this does is incentivize click-bait even more.

Will this change cause Average View Duration (AVD) to plummet?

How does this help anyone? If I watch a video and I bounce in 30s that should tell you I don’t like this video. That should tell advertisers that im not going to get to their ads. That should tell the content creator that my demographic doesnt like that content. Theres no value in giving blanket views. Its why live streams on this platform have no value, because they dont show ccv.

@reneritchie does this change how YouTube counts views on embedded autoplaying videos outside of the YouTube website and platform?

Since this is based on the viewer seeing the first frame, does this count the automatic preview on mobile & desktop when you hover a video as a view or are those not counted?

If I click through all of my videos searching for a comment or a line in the description, will I now be banned for farming views across all my vids because of this? If I click on a video for 1 second to report it instantly pausing, now this will count as a view for them anyway?

How will this impact CTR / AVD?

If someone on PC is scrolling through their recommendations and hovers their mouse over the thumbnail for half a second (which will cause autoplay), does this count as a view even though it was never clicked?

What are other analytics gonna be based off of like ctr and avd? are they gonna use the new view count or the engaged view system? I imagine if they use the new 1st frame view system then its gonna tank both of these metrics to not accurately represent what they show

So, the money earned from Shorts—will it be based on views, or on engaging views?

i know i keep having my history filled with videos i passed over (with the mouse) ... NEVER watched, going to click another video ... i guess those all count as "i watched it"... which is not helpful to that (the video i never watched) content creator, IMHO

Engaged views still more important when it comes to metrics and earning,,, Frames counts or numbers are just numbers

Like… why?

Profilbild von Kaos🌱

So we are just gonna inflate the number showing so brands thinks we have more views cause they can't see the actual ones that actually watch the video

Will engaged views be available by traffic source for long-form? That would make it much easier to separate stronger title-thumbnail packaging from autoplay or low-intent starts

I have a better idea: How about make views count if viewers watch the videos in-full? I believe this may allow content creators to show all their efforts, and may entice more engagement from viewers.

Hi @YouTubeInsider , sorry to interrupt. Our 7M-sub channel (@Super-LangLang) was wrongly auto-terminated by an AI bot, and automated appeals failed instantly without human review. Full details and production proof here: Thank you so much for any help!
