Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense announced that naval units consisting of TCG Sancaktar, TCG Gökova, and TCG Bafra will operate in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia, and in the Arabian Sea between January 30 and February 25. The mission aims to provide logistical support to the Turkish Task Force Command in Somalia and to support the Çağrı Bey drilling vessel, which will conduct research activities within the maritime jurisdiction areas of the Federal Republic of Somalia. According to the ministry, the naval units will conduct a port visit to Djibouti on February 6–7 and are scheduled to arrive in Somalia on February 11.

A Turkish vessel carrying APCs and other military equipment reportedly suffered a systems’ failure off the coast of Somalia’s Puntland state. Maritime police from Puntland boarded the vessel and recorded purported video clips of the military vehicles. A security source says there are discussions about possibly towing the vessel to a port along the coastline. The source said they believe the ship’s destination was Mogadishu where Turkey runs a military training facility. Turkey also recently increased its military presence in Somalia. It’s unclear if the APCs are for the Turkish forces or Turkish-trained Somali soldiers. (The unverified clip was shared by a local source)

But what kind of help is it if, in return, Ankara gets to keep Somali ports and oil, and expand its military footprint in the region? For over a decade, Turkey has presented itself as Africa’s ‘Muslim brother,’ stepping into Somalia with aid, business deals and military training. But behind the humanitarian PR, who really benefits? In Mogadishu, Turkey now runs two of Somalia’s most strategic assets: the airport and the seaport. A Turkish firm gets 45% of port revenues. That’s nearly half of Somalia’s maritime income going to a foreign country. Moreover, since signing a ten-year oil-exploration deal with Somalia, Turkey has made a 20-billion-barrel discovery worth 1.6 trillion dollars. And Ankara also has its biggest overseas military base in Somalia. Let’s be honest: this is influence and exploitation, not solidarity and friendship. And this isn’t about Turkey and Somalia alone. It’s about Africa’s sovereignty, our right to negotiate on an equal footing, to develop without being cornered, to say ‘no’ when help comes with strings attached.
