BREAKING: Violent response at Church of Ireland synod over questions on Enoch Burke Martina, Josiah and Jemima Burke attended the Church of Ireland synod in Armagh to question church leaders on Enoch Burke’s incarceration. The Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of all Ireland John McDowell and Bishop of Meath and Kildare Pat Storey were among the attendees at the event at Armagh City Hotel. To this day they have refused to speak on Enoch Burke who is now almost a full year behind bars. The Burkes entered the synod hall as Bishop Pat Storey was speaking. Martina Burke began to question the Archbishop directly on why Enoch Burke was suspended from Wilson’s Hospital School for upholding the Church of Ireland ethos. The Archbishop refused to answer questions and immediately suspended the business of the synod. Bishop Pat Storey left the hall. Martina and Josiah Burke continued to question the Archbishop on why the Church of Ireland was silent on Enoch Burke’s incarceration. The Archbishop did not speak. Josiah Burke held up a picture of Enoch Burke with the words “Enoch Burke 354 days in prison.” A synod attendee ripped this out of his hands and destroyed it. Following this incident Jemima Burke was assaulted by a synod staff member who had to be held back by others in the room. The Archbishop left at this point, continuing to make no comment or intervene in any way. Following this the Burkes left the synod hall and held a demonstration at the hotel gates for over an hour. The scenes witnessed and experienced at the Church of Ireland synod were shocking and unprecedented. We continue to seek answers on why Archbishop John McDowell is silent on the incarceration of Enoch Burke for upholding the ethos of the Church of Ireland.

Video footage shows a priest, dressed in ritual garments, being forced to carry a dead hen around his neck while remaining silent, as he is paraded through the streets. The chants of "crucify him" by the ethnic Oromos witnessing the incident reflect a disturbing level of animosity and a regression to archaic methods of addressing grievances. Such events in the Oromiya region of Ethiopia have brought to light disturbing instances of abuse targeting Ethiopian Orthodox priests, particularly those belonging to the ethnic Amhara community. The priest's agony and humiliation are clear, highlighting the severity of the situation and reflecting the anti-Amhara sentiment prevalent within certain political circles. The abuse directed at Orthodox ethnic Amhara priests stems from a political belief held by some Oromo nationalists who view Amharas as settler colonizers. According to this narrative, Amharas allegedly oppressed ethnic Oromos through the Ethiopian monarchy, the imposition of the Amharic language, and the dominance of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Consequently, the Orthodox Church is perceived as a tool of colonization and is targeted for restructuring by Oromo dominance. The abusive treatment of Orthodox priests not only highlights the escalating religious tensions but also reveals the deep-rooted ethnic divisions within Ethiopia. The chants of "crucify him" by the ethnic Oromos witnessing the incident reflect a disturbing level of animosity and a regression to archaic methods of addressing grievances. This situation is exacerbated by the anti-Amhara sentiment among certain political leaders, which is now filtering down to grassroots levels, perpetuating discrimination and fostering a hostile environment. In addition to external pressures, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church faces internal challenges related to demands for ethnic-based restructuring. Some Oromo nationalists advocate for the appointment of an Oromo archbishop, mirroring the country's political Ethnic Federalism. However, this proposal has faced significant opposition, with many faithful emphasizing the unity of the church and opposing the disintegration of its leadership along ethnic lines. The abuses against Orthodox Amhara priests are part of a broader campaign to create a homogenous Oromo land. Ethnic Amharas are subjected to forced evictions, massacres, and systemic tools designed to displace them from the capital city of Addis Ababa and other Oromiya regions. These actions perpetuate ethnic tensions and exacerbate the already fragile social fabric of the country. The mistreatment of priests, coupled with the broader discriminatory practices against ethnic Amharas, underscores the urgent need for the international institutions to address these issues promptly.
