Central to these was the absolute obligation for Kinshasa to disarm, dismantle, and sever all ties with the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a militant group driven by a genocidal ideology whose members participated in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Here is the proof of the Minembwe blockade. A crime against humanity. Due to the blockade imposed on the population of Minembwe by the Burundian military, FARDC, and Wazalendo, women, mostly Banyamulenge and Bashi, and some men decided to take the risk and break this blockade to go get food for their children and not let them die of hunger. They crossed all the high plateaus and were able to buy some food after at least two days of travel. On the return trip, this morning at 5 am, about 80 to 100 people who made up the convoy fell into the ambush of the FDNB Burundi/FARDC/Mai-Mai coalition, which fired on these unfortunate people. The Burundian soldiers came from their camp in Mikalati with some FARDC, while the Wazalendo and some other FARDC came from Kipupu via Kigazura. A unit of Twirwaneho came from Mikenke to rescue these people in distress. Unfortunately, the harm was already done. The people were already scattered in the surrounding bushes and forests. While Twirwaneho clashed with these Mai-Mai/FARDC, whom they pushed back to Kipupu, the Burundian soldiers pursued the unfortunate ones in their hiding places, killed some, and took others hostage, bringing them to the camp. Others almost 30 are still missing in the bush luckily alive or dead. The toll is 4 men killed by Burundian and FARDC bullets, and reliable sources speak of 45 people, most of whom are women, detained at the Mikalati camp of FDN-Burundi and FARDC, with only 27 people arriving in Mikenke after losing everything. It should be noted that during these clashes, the coalition of evil called for air support. A helicopter intervened and fired on Twirwaneho. On its way back, threatening the villages of Minembwe, it was hit and fell into the lake. I denounce this blockade, which is a crime against humanity, and condemn this will to destroy the fundamental elements of the life of a single ethnic group by killing by starvation. This is worse than torture, it's the most dehumanizing form of persecution. But all of humanity is silent. Here is the proof of the Minembwe blockade. A crime against humanity. Due to the blockade imposed on the population of Minembwe by the Burundian military, FARDC, and Wazalendo, women, mostly Banyamulenge and Bashi, and some men decided to take the risk and break this blockade to go get food for their children and not let them die of hunger. They crossed all the high plateaus and were able to buy some food after at least two days of travel. On the return trip, this morning at 5 am, about 80 to 100 people who made up the convoy fell into the ambush of the FDNB Burundi/FARDC/Mai-Mai coalition, which fired on these unfortunate people. The Burundian soldiers came from their camp in Mikalati with some FARDC, while the Wazalendo and some other FARDC came from Kipupu via Kigazura. A unit of Twirwaneho came from Mikenke to rescue these people in distress. Unfortunately, the harm was already done. The people were already scattered in the surrounding bushes and forests. While Twirwaneho clashed with these Mai-Mai/FARDC, whom they pushed back to Kipupu, the Burundian soldiers pursued the unfortunate ones in their hiding places, killed some, and took others hostage, bringing them to the camp. Others almost 30 are still missing in the bush luckily alive or dead. The toll is 4 men killed by Burundian and FARDC bullets, and reliable sources speak of 45 people, most of whom are women, detained at the Mikalati camp of FDN-Burundi and FARDC, with only 27 people arriving in Mikenke after losing everything. It should be noted that during these clashes, the coalition of evil called for air support. A helicopter intervened and fired on Twirwaneho. On its way back, threatening the villages of Minembwe, it was hit and fell into the lake. I denounce this blockade, which is a crime against humanity, and condemn this will to destroy the fundamental elements of the life of a single ethnic group by killing by starvation. This is worse than torture, it's the most dehumanizing form of persecution. But all of humanity is silent. Torture is a Crime Under International Law – Nigeria Must Be Held Accountable Torture is unequivocally prohibited under international law. The United Nations Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT), to which Nigeria is a state party, explicitly states in Article 2(2): "No exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat of war, internal political instability or any other public emergency, may be invoked as a justification of torture." Furthermore, Article 1 of the Convention defines torture as any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted by or with the consent or acquiescence of public officials. The prohibition of torture is also enshrined in Article 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both of which affirm: "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." Despite these clear legal norms, the Nigerian regime continues to support and shield the Nigerian Army in its persistent use of torture, arbitrary detention, and extrajudicial actions—particularly against Biafran civilians, activists, and human rights defenders. Documented evidence and firsthand testimonies reveal a disturbing pattern of systemic abuse, targeting the Biafran population for peacefully asserting their right to self-determination. The Nigerian government's complicity in these human rights violations is not only a breach of its international obligations but a crime against humanity under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. We, therefore, condemn in the strongest terms the Nigerian regime's endorsement and concealment of torture and other brutal practices against the Biafran people. These acts cannot go unpunished. The international community must act. It is time to uphold the principles of human dignity and the rule of law by supporting Biafra’s lawful quest for recognition. This is the reality of the Tutsi/Banyamulenge in the DRC — a people of courage, resilience, and unbroken spirit. My story is just one among many. I was born when my late father (paix à son âme) served in Mobutu’s army — not by choice, but as part of #Twirwaneho, then known as #Abagiriye, who defended our people against the Mai-Mai. That same ideology continues today under the name Wazalendo, still labeling the #Tutsi/#Banyamulenge as “foreigners,” as even repeated by H.E President Felix Tshisekedi - UDPS during his meeting with the Belgian diaspora earlier this month. As a young man, I also joined the army — not for politics, but for survival and dignity. At that time, the Tutsi/Banyamulenge were told to leave the DRC within six days. Today, once again, I have left my family to fight for the rights of our people — because no one else will. As H.E. President Paul Kagame said in the video below, “I was fighting for my own rights — rights that no human rights organization could give me.” Several times, the Tutsi/Banyamulenge have been given ultimatums to leave the DRC. Last month in #Ivura, they were given ten days to leave. Now, in #Mikenke and #Minembwe, the FARDC, together with the #Burundian army SE Evariste Ndayishimiye , have given the Banyamulenge only 24 hours. This is the reality of the Tutsi/Banyamulenge in the DRC — a people of courage, resilience, and unbroken spirit. My story is just one among many. I was born when my late father (paix à son âme) served in Mobutu’s army — not by choice, but as part of #Twirwaneho, then known as #Abagiriye, who defended our people against the Mai-Mai. That same ideology continues today under the name Wazalendo, still labeling the #Tutsi/#Banyamulenge as “foreigners,” as even repeated by H.E President Felix Tshisekedi - UDPS during his meeting with the Belgian diaspora earlier this month. As a young man, I also joined the army — not for politics, but for survival and dignity. At that time, the Tutsi/Banyamulenge were told to leave the DRC within six days. Today, once again, I have left my family to fight for the rights of our people — because no one else will. As H.E. Like all Africans and beyond, I am deeply saddened by the situation in the Eastern Congo. I want to pass my condolences to South Africa on the death of its soldiers who have died in pursuit of peace in the DRC, and everyone who has been killed by this crisis. Today I took time to understand the issues and the root cause of the Great Lakes crisis, you can’t understand it all in a day. I am not an expert on the Great Lakes, but I found two insightful videos featuring Tanzania’s founding father, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, and former South African President Thabo Mbeki explaining it. Both leaders were actively involved in efforts to address the Great Lakes issue, with Nyerere engaging as far back as 1992 and earlier. The problem can be traced back to 1885 during the Berlin Conference, where Africa was partitioned among European colonial powers and borders were drawn regardless of ethnic sensitivities. Belgium, the colonial power in the DRC, and Germany, the colonial power in Rwanda, drew borders that divided the Rwandan Kingdom, incorporating parts of it into what is now the DRC. As a result of this partitioning, the Banyarwanda (including the Banyamulenge) ended up living on both sides of the border—in Rwanda and the DRC. Just like the Tswanas in South Africa and Botswana. Despite being Zairean (Congolese) citizens, the Banyarwanda in the DRC were often treated as foreigners by successive Congolese governments, and they faced significant discrimination. The situation worsened after the Tutsi genocide in Rwanda in 1994 which was carried out by the Hutus, when perpetrators of the genocide fled into the DRC, particularly to areas where Congolese Banyarwanda lived. These perpetrators formed a militia called the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). The FDLR, which opposes the current Rwandan government, was later incorporated into the Congolese army, causing Rwanda to view their presence in Eastern Congo as a significant security threat. Rwanda objected to the persecution of the Congolese Banyarwanda by the Congolese Government and the FDLR in the DRC. Rwanda’s said its involvement in the DRC is rooted in its efforts to neutralise the FDLR and protect its national security, as well as to address the marginalisation of the Banyarwanda in Eastern Congo. However, this involvement has also sparked significant controversy and accusations of resource exploitation and destabilisation by the DRC. The M23 (March 23 Movement) originated from the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP), a Tutsi-led rebel group in the DRC that operated in the mid-2000s. The CNDP was mainly focused on protecting the rights of Congolese Tutsis (Banyarwanda) who faced discrimination and violence, particularly after the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. Reports by Human Rights Watch in October 2022 revealed that the Congolese military supported the FDLR in their military operations against the M23 rebel group. At the same time, the Congolese government has accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 militarily. Currently the conflict involves the M23 and the Congolese army, with the DRC accusing Rwanda of deploying its troops on Congolese soil. As Nyerere points out in the video, the Zairean government stripped the Banyarwanda in the Congo of their citizenship, rendering them stateless. However, they are Congolese due to the colonial borders. What is clear is that this crisis is not an overnight problem, it has been there for decades, long before both Presidents Paul Kagame and Félix Tshisekedi were in power. What is lacking is leadership from the region and the continent to help both countries resolve this crisis once and for all. It is like a volcano that has been erupting periodically, the crisis is crying out for a modern day Nyerere or Mbeki. It is now unrealistic to expect Presidents Kagame and Tshisekedi to invite each other for coffee, it needs someone with gravitas to invite them. This crisis has no military solution except dialogue.

Martin Fayulu, who today is one of the leaders of the #DRC Opposition, former presidential candidate, and leader of the ECIDé party calling for "National Dialogue", has consistently fueled anti-Tutsi hate throughout his political career. His latest xenophobic comment on Tutsi Banyamulenge is not a simple slip of the tongue, but illustrates the wider systemic anti-Tutsi xenophobia characterizing the current Kinshasa regime and its genocidal #FDLR backers. On March 9, 2020 at the French Senate, Fayulu spoke at a conference titled "60 Years of Instability in Africa of Great Lakes", alongside a convicted denier of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, the Cameroonian Charles Onana, as well as other prominent genocide deniers such as the Canadian Judi Rever and French Hubert Védrine. In his intervention at the French Senate, right after directing a xenophobic comment at the La Francophonie Secretary General Louise Mushikiwabo, contesting her legitimacy to lead the OIF because she is (Tutsi) Rwandan, Fayulu went on claiming that the Tutsi have "infiltrated" and "invaded" the armed forces of Congo. The notion of “Tutsi infiltration” is an old conspiracy theory used by the perpetrators of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda against the hundreds of thousands of Tutsi who were pushed to exile and subjected to targeted killings by the consecutive genocidal governments of Kayibanda, Habyarimana and Sindikukwabo, since Rwanda's independence. This theory of a "Tutsi foreigner-infilitrator-invader" has then consistently been used since the 1994 genocide by genocide deniers and promoters of the anti-Tutsi genocide rhetoric, which is today politically and militarily embodied by the #FDLR and their support networks which include the DRC Government of Felix Tshisekedi. At the conference on March 9, 2020, Fayulu, addressing the French Senate in Paris, declared: "I’ll give you a figure. Today in the Congolese army, which we call the FARDC… there are 300 Tutsi officers… I have no problem with that, I grew up with Rwandans. I play tennis, I was in friends’ groups with them, we are brothers and sisters… but what is going on? In the Public Force, which is what the Congolese army was called before Independence, there wasn’t a single Tutsi. In the ANC, the Congolese National Army after independence, there wasn’t a single Tutsi. In the Zairian Armed Forces, the FAZ, there weren’t any. Today, how is it that there are 300 officers, more than 100 generals… What is really happening here? Fayulu’s concluding rhetorical question was not a simple harmless statement. In the ongoing context of systemic Tutsiphobia in DRC, widespread use of anti-Tutsi hate speech, arbitrary arrests of thousands of Tutsi-looking or Kinyarwanda speaking Congolese, hate attacks and killings of Congolese Military and Police personnel of Tutsi origin*, Fayulu’s statement is a discursive weapon of incitement to violence, hate crimes, and ethnic cleansing of Congolese Tutsi in DRC. *A report published in January 2025 by Never Again Rwanda “Hate Speech and Violence Status Report in DRC (2021-2024)” has documented, between 2021 and 2024, twenty-seven (27) cases of targeted attacks or killings of Congolese Tutsi Military and Police personnel, labeled as “Rwandan infiltrators”, “Rwandan spies”, etc. The lynching of Captain Patrick Rukatura Gisore (video recorded and shared on social media), who was burned alive by Wazalendo in Goma on November 9, 2023, is well known. The case of Lt. Bob Ngirivugizi, who was hanged at his home by his own colleagues on March 18, 2023, is also well known. The mainstream media such as Le journal Afrique TV5MONDE, that provide a platform for such promoters of anti-Tutsi ideology (as seen in this interview below with Fayulu), and the lack of denunciation of such dangerous rhetoric by the "human rights" organizations Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, contribute in this catastrophic normalization of genocide ideology which has led to 1 million Rwandan Tutsi killed in 1994 and tens of thousands of Congolese Tutsi killed in DRC, as well as close to a million Congolese Tutsi pushed to exile. Owing to such normalization of anti-Tutsi hate in Congolese politics and mainstream international media, being Tutsi today in Congo, protecting the Tutsi from targeted violence, or refusing to espouse such hatred against the Tutsi, has turned into a death sentence. We have seen it materialized in the widespread targeted killings and arbitrary arrests in Congo, as well as in the death sentences by DRC Government against the members of #AFC/#M23/#Twirwaneho (including against their family members such as the wife of Corneille Nangaa), or against the former president Joseph Kabila.
