This is sewage water, not rainwater. It has remained unresolved for more than 48 hours, turning a major thoroughfare into a large, foul-smelling sewage lake.... Following regular testing undertaken by Windermere Town Council, results have once again demonstrated sewage contamination entering the small beck that runs through Windermere village. For more than a decade, the Environment Agency has known about this sewage pollution. It has even narrowed the source down to a small number of locations along the beck, yet they have still failed to bring the problem to an end. The pollution has been attributed to misconnections, but no action has been taken to ensure the issue is resolved. United Utilities states on its website that, once an issue like this is reported, its operational teams will investigate the problem, write to local residents explaining how they will resolve the pollution and protect the local environment, and trace the source back to the property where the wastewater pipes are misconnected using techniques such as dye tracing and closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveys. If a misconnection is identified, the company says it will provide advice on the corrective work needed to fix the issue. So why haven’t the Environment Agency and United Utilities carried out this work and brought an end to a problem they have known about for more than ten years? Yes, it is ultimately the responsibility of the property owner to rectify a misconnection. But it is the responsibility of the Environment Agency to regulate pollution and of United Utilities to investigate and help identify the source. Many people have been wondering why there is so much raw sewage in Zimbabwe’s Lake Chivero, Harare’s main source of drinking water. These are sewer pipes in Harare, they are carrying raw sewage but as you can see, they are old and no longer fit for purpose. Today, the entirety of Zimbabwe’s capital city, Harare, lacks a modern sewer system because successive ZANUPF governments have failed to maintain, let alone replace, this critical infrastructure. Those of you who grew up in Zimbabwe’s urban areas during the 1980s will remember how we used to run on top of these sewage pipes as kids. All they required was regular maintenance and timely replacement where needed. How do they even continue pumping sewage when it all ends up in the Mukuvisi River which pushes it to the drinking water source, Lake Chivero? This level of incompetence and corrupt governance is both historic and insane, it should not be happening in a country like Zimbabwe, whose citizens hold powerful engineering jobs across the globe. How did we sink to this level of embarrassment, where we can’t even sort out sewer pipes because of a broken economy authored by a corrupt authoritarian regime? This is Mylapore, off Radhakrishnan Salai near Vivekananda college. NO ONE has come to clear the water here. It’s been like this since yesterday, and by the minute more sewage water is coming out and getting mixed. Water has entered all the houses at ground floor level here. Please do something about this and other parts of Mylapore. Water has never stagnated here, not even during the 2015 floods. All through the year, they kept digging up the roads and multiple times the roads caved in and they kept restoring. Now the whole thing has reversed and water is completely stagnated. The sewage crisis laid bare As we’ve been having a wet winter, sewage has been cascading into the River Roding from outfalls everywhere. But one has been discharging for so long (550 hours, or over three weeks) that I thought it was an error with the sensor. I decided to spend my free time on a Saturday night checking it out. It was not hard to find, as the loud noise of rushing water instantly drew me towards the right part of the site. Climbing a fence, I found that the outfall was covered in brambles & fallen trees and hadn’t been inspected in years. There was clearly a fault in the storm tanks which was causing them to spill huge amounts of sewage, even when it wasn’t raining. Even worse, the outfall itself had become clogged with years of debris, so the whole site had been flooded & become a lake of sewage, literally acres in extent. The flow was so intense that it was not possible to fully measure it, but I would estimate it was at least 100 litres a second, likely more. I checked the ammonia levels & it maxed out my checker, so I used a higher range checker which gave an ammonia reading of 27ppm: ie very concentrated sewage. Doing some quick calculations, I discovered that this one spill had poured at least 180,000,000 million litres of concentrated raw sewage straight into the River Roding, putting the health of local people at risk and causing huge ecological damage to the river. It frankly beggars belief that I, as a volunteer in my spare time, was able to discover this serious illegal sewage spill, but at no point has anyone from either Thames Water or the Environment Agency thought to go and investigate the outfall that has apparently been flowing for weeks. The time for talking has ended: we now need change and real action.

The sewage crisis laid bare As we’ve been having a wet winter, sewage has been cascading into the River Roding from outfalls everywhere. But one has been discharging for so long (550 hours, or over three weeks) that I thought it was an error with the sensor. I decided to spend my free time on a Saturday night checking it out. It was not hard to find, as the loud noise of rushing water instantly drew me towards the right part of the site. Climbing a fence, I found that the outfall was covered in brambles & fallen trees and hadn’t been inspected in years. There was clearly a fault in the storm tanks which was causing them to spill huge amounts of sewage, even when it wasn’t raining. Even worse, the outfall itself had become clogged with years of debris, so the whole site had been flooded & become a lake of sewage, literally acres in extent. The flow was so intense that it was not possible to fully measure it, but I would estimate it was at least 100 litres a second, likely more. I checked the ammonia levels & it maxed out my checker, so I used a higher range checker which gave an ammonia reading of 27ppm: ie very concentrated sewage. Doing some quick calculations, I discovered that this one spill had poured at least 180,000,000 million litres of concentrated raw sewage straight into the River Roding, putting the health of local people at risk and causing huge ecological damage to the river. It frankly beggars belief that I, as a volunteer in my spare time, was able to discover this serious illegal sewage spill, but at no point has anyone from either Thames Water or the Environment Agency thought to go and investigate the outfall that has apparently been flowing for weeks. The time for talking has ended: we now need change and real action.
