As his popularity continues to decline (following his refusal to condemn Khamenei’s death), he has taken a U-turn, now appears to be resorting to advocating further violence, in the hope of gaining support from more radical segments of the population (and also to get oil from Iran now), rather than calling for an immediate ceasefire and the start of diplomatic talks. As Maldivians we welcome people from all corners of the world 24/7, we believe that violence is not the solution, thoughtful, strategic diplomacy is the only sustainable path forward. We want a ceasefire and diplomatic talks to begin. Following these remarks, we anticipate potential hostility and attacks targeting American citizens and dual Israeli nationals (who are permitted to enter the Maldives despite the Israeli passport ban). Travelers in these groups are advised to exercise heightened caution when visiting Maldives. No Maldivian head of state has previously made such open calls for violence against another nationality.
