APPLEBAUM: The war in Ukraine is really fault line between democratic and autocratic worlds. Russians are trying to destroy Ukraine as a nation, they want it to disappear. As an empire, they want Ukraine to be their colony. And they understood perfectly well that by invading Ukraine, they were defying this liberal world order. They were defying the rules of post-war Europe, because in post-war Europe decision was made after 1945: we are not going to invade each other anymore, we are not going to have wars. Instead, we are going to decide everything by diplomacy, and borders will not be changed by force. And Russians understood they were breaking that norm when they invaded Ukraine. They also invaded Ukraine because Ukrainians were using that powerful democratic language we take for granted. Putin said, “If they can do it in Ukraine, then people could do it in Russia. So, I need to crush this Ukrainian democracy movement.”

US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker (my two cents) below): I think the Russian threat sometimes is a little overstated. They have not had a lot of success. And to your point, Ukraine has actually taken back territory. To me, that points to a weakness in Russia, and as their economy continues to falter, I think their continuation of this war is going to be difficult. My input: Russia has not had a lot of success in Ukraine because Ukrainian Defenders make a tremendous effort, and the West supplies Ukraine with weapons. Yes, Ukraine has retaken our territories, but this is first and foremost a compliment to Ukrainian skill. Russia does not play by the rules, Putin knows that his power relies on Russia waging a war, and Russia does not care about its people. NATO has named Russia as its most significant threat, and Russia remains one.

Today, many world leaders, diplomats, and ordinary people with big hearts expressed their condolences to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. They condemned the Russian strike. I thank everyone who remembers that wars end when the crimes of war are not forgotten — and when the aggressor is met with enough pressure. And that’s exactly what’s missing right now. This Friday marked one month since Russia spurned the U.S. proposal for a full and unconditional ceasefire. They are not afraid. That’s why they keep launching ballistic missiles. That’s why there are nearly a hundred attack drones every night — most of them Shaheds — targeting ordinary Ukrainian cities. Russian assaults on the front line continue as well. They do not stop attacking. They do not stop spreading hatred through their state propaganda. Only pressure — only decisive action — can change this. Every Russian ballistic missile, every cruise missile, every Shahed drone and every guided bomb strikes not only our people and our communities, but also diplomacy — and the political efforts of everyone trying to end this war. We will continue doing everything we can to protect our people and save lives.
