ICYMI, last week, professor emeritus John Clarke shared the Nobel Prize in physics with John Martinis and Michel Devoret, who worked alongside Clarke researching quantum tunneling while at Cal. And for chemistry, Professor Omar Yaghi was recognized for his work in developing metal-organic frameworks. Yaghi's win brings UC Berkeley's count to a total of 28 faculty members who have won a Nobel Prize.

He praises his co-laureates John Martinis and Michel Devoret, who he worked together with at a lab in Berkeley, California, some 40 years ago. “I had completely forgotten that October was Nobel Prize month!” Physics laureate Michel Devoret had a hard time believing it was true when he learned about his Nobel Prize. “Just to be sure, I called my daughter who is living in Paris, nine hours ahead of me. She was able to see that this is for real,” he tells us. In this interview, Devoret reflects on the excitement of seeing the fruits of research. He also talks about his co-laureate John Clarke, one of his role models.
