U.S.-CHINA RELATIONS: "Remember, we’re not looking for a giant comprehensive trade agreement with China. We’re looking to manage this relationship. Part of this is getting the deficit down. The deficit hasn’t been this low with China for many years." Jamieson Greer Greer emphasizes that the administration isn't pursuing a... show more

🚨BREAKING: United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says the US trade deficit with the EU for 2025 likely bigger than the US deficit with China. Greer was asked a question suggesting America is treating Europe more poorly than China in terms of trade policy. Greer responded STRONGLY: “I think the premise is just wrong, because we have much higher tariffs on China… I mean, to suggest that we're treating Europe more poorly than China, is just out of line with the facts. I mean, there have been, since 2018, very substantive tariffs on China. There have been export controls on China—that they hate. You know, there have been investment scrutiny that the Congress of the United States has stepped up. It's just, these are just things of a totally different nature, I think, for the United States. Well, let me make one more point: Our trade deficit with the EU this year for 2025 might end up being bigger than trade deficit with China. We reduced that trade deficit by about 25% last year. So when it comes to imbalance, we have a huge imbalance with Europe. You've had huge access into the US market. For many years, we've had limited access into Europe. You limit our agricultural imports, you limit our industrial imports, and you have a huge surplus with us. And it's not because you're particularly competitive. I know I'm here in Europe, and I spent a lot of time in Europe… I like Europe, but the reality is you're not competitive… We know you have bad energy policies. The fact that you have this massive surplus with the United States can't be because you’re competitive.” [Note this is a machine translation, may not be 100% accurate!] I'm here in Davos during the World Economic Forum meetings. Shoot me a note if you're around!

"The trade deficit that we have with China is only growing..." United States Trade Representative: "That's not true at all. It was $300B coming into President Trump's term; we're now tracking to have only a $140B deficit with China this year. The trade deficit in goods with China is down by 40%!"

This is Jamieson Greer, the US Trade Representative, Trump’s lead negotiator. He’s talking about ongoing talks with China and the EU deal. But listen to what he says and try to understand what this means for Canada and trade talks. Things have changed.

.United States Trade Representative Ambassador Greer: "The specific authorities this administration is using have changed but the trade strategy has not. We are committed to continuing to use tariffs and to negotiate deals to support the re-industrialization of our economy, protect American workers and increase their wages, and shrink our trade deficit."

🇺🇸🇨🇳 U.S. TRADE AMBASSADOR: CHINA GOT OUR RARE EARTH TECH, THAT WAS A MISTAKE U.S. Trade Ambassador Jamieson Greer: “This is technology with respect to the rare earth. It's technology that the U.S. invented and pioneered 60 years ago. And China was able to have some of that transfer of technology, which was a mistake, turns out. And so it's completely normal for us, in the face of Chinese export controls, to diversify and develop other sources. And again, we get these word salads coming out of Beijing trying to justify what they've done. No one's fooled.” Source: Laura Ingraham

In June 1996, then-Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi addressed the U.S. House of Representatives, expressing concerns about the trade imbalance between the United States and China. She highlighted that the U.S. imposed an average tariff of 2% on Chinese goods, whereas China levied an average tariff of 35% on U.S. products, questioning the fairness of this disparity. Pelosi emphasized that the growing trade deficit, which had increased from $3.5 billion in 1989 to approximately $34 billion by 1996, was detrimental to American workers and labeled U.S.-China trade as a “job loser.” She urged her colleagues to reconsider the status quo and advocate for more balanced trade relations.

.United States Trade Representative Ambassador Greer on upcoming meetings with the Chinese: It would be very helpful if the two sides could get together and talk about what types of goods we should be trading with each other — preferably nonsensitive goods, in a balanced way. We're already moving in that direction with the way our trade deficit with China is trending down significantly, and this is an opportunity to further find balance.

NEW: Peter Thiel on Trump's Tariff Policy "We need a very drastic reset with China ... about a quarter of the US trade deficit is bilaterally with China and another quarter is indirectly with China. There are ways that the economic relationship with China is fairly efficient ... we don't really want a lot of these jobs in Wisconsin. But it's this geopolitical rivalry that's in the background that you have to factor in. The economists never factor it in properly with China." Peter Thiel with Joe Lonsdale on American Optimist

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer: "We feel confident that we've reached an agreement that will not only continue to protect American workers, American jobs, American supply chains, but really strengthen the North American economy and create a situation where North America will continue to be an energy powerhouse, a manufacturing powerhouse, and align on important things like economic security and digital security."

Jamieson Greer, asked by Katie Simpson whether the January 1 auto-tariff threat is real and why Canada is cutting deals with the EU and India on U.S. soil: Please stop calling it a threat. That’s just “domestic economic policy.” Canada already has a trade surplus of $45–60 billion with us; without that offtake they’d be in deficit. The EU too. Low growth plus low growth is still low growth, so feel free to shop the surplus around. We’re busy reshoring, and we’ve already cut deals with almost everyone else. Technical talks with Ottawa are happening. A handful of issues are just “quite difficult.” Next question Jamieson Greer

The Trump administration is having “active conversations” with countries that have already agreed to trade deals with the U.S., says U.S. Trade Representative Amb. Jamieson Greer, telling Margaret Brennan, “we expect them to stand by” the deals. “I haven't heard anyone yet come to me and say, ‘The deal is off.’ They want to see how this plays out. I'm in active conversation with them on it,” Greer says.
