Edith's family made the unimaginable decision to give her away to another family that was able to flee. She told me about the last time she saw her father as he put her on a train and collapsed. She never saw her family again. When she got to the UK, the family that said they would care for her abandoned her. She grew up completely alone. But she figured it out. She wound up having a successful career, finding a great husband, and moving to America. At the end of our conversation, she goes back to work and we make a date to meet for ice cream.

Her body was weak, but she refused to leave her babies for even a second. The rescuers knew they couldn’t rush things. So they started by bringing her food and keeping their distance, hoping she would realize they weren’t there to hurt her. Even though she was starving, her eyes never left her puppies. Every movement made her nervous. All she cared about was keeping her little family safe. They carefully placed some food inside a humane trap, hoping she would walk in. But again, she chose to stay beside her babies instead. After almost an hour of patience and gentle effort, the team finally managed to rescue her.
