Macca, the guys in the middle can jump and use their cover shadow to make the press even more aggressive. A high press by marking not the man, but the pass. I call it marking from the front (instead of marking from behind as we are taught since we were kids).

There were times this season where United pressed so well as a unit, but lately, it's been inconsistent and unorganized and we're almost back to playing a very deep line, it really is worrying, we often win the ball high up the pitch when we press well, we should restart!

You definitely have a point. Look at Joan Garcia's on-the-ball performance vs Newcastle, particularly the 1st half. He helped immensely to play around Newcastle's aggressive pressing with his short passing, play through the press with his driven passes & play over the press with his much more calculated & accurate longballs. Put Szczęsny in that match, and I don't think we win because he wouldn't have been able to relieve pressure like Garcia can. 🎬 | 🕊️

Tactical Report [1st half]: Nkosingiphile “Mshini” Ngcobo📝 Role: Central Midfielder / Controller Observations: Tempo Management: Mshini effectively dictated the pace of the game, controlling transitions and ensuring the team played to his rhythm. Positional Awareness: Maintained excellent spatial awareness, constantly scanning surroundings to anticipate opposition movements and adjust positioning. Passing & Distribution: He showed composure in possession; consistently found forward passing options without forcing risky balls. Created and exploited passing lanes to connect with the likes of Shabalala and Ighodaro across all areas. Combination Play: The understanding with Ox was particularly effective; they maintained optimal distances to facilitate fluid build-up and maintain team structure. It's not perfect, but they give the team improved quality together. Defensive Contribution: Showed high commitment out of possession, applied intelligent pressure, closed passing lanes, and maintained positional awareness. Even after Ox was removed, he was the pivot who used the ball to manage the game and supported the build-up. Impact on Team Play: Provided stability in midfield, controlled transitions, and allowed other players the freedom to operate with confidence. Concentration, Anticipation of Danger & Recovery This isn't a dig at any one individual, it's just analysis of what I keep seeing. Defending in the Middle Third: > Protect/Cover Central Passes & Players > CB's Pass on CF/CAM's When It's Too High > CM's Drop on & pick up > Pressing Should be Secondary Defending In the Defensive Third: > Protect Box/Central Passes into CF's/10s > Force Wide & Then Defend Crosses > Allow Players on Edge with Numbers Behind as a Last Resort Continually we seem to lack real concentration for "Where the danger is"? > Worrying about irrelevant wide-men > Trying to Press when there's a man in the hole unmarked & too high for CB's > Lack of intense recovery sprints to get back behind the ball This is clips from 4 different managers/coaches & I could have pulled similar issues under Barry Ferguson

This Is How Inter Breaks You Without The Ball⬇️ 1/ At this level of the Champions League, small tactical details decide big games. A smart press, a forced pass… and suddenly, the momentum shifts. 2/ Last night’s Bayern vs Inter match was a clear example of this. Inzaghi’s team was fully organized without the ball. 3/ When Kim Min-Jae received the ball, Inter didn’t press aggressively. They held their shape. Thuram didn’t charge – he waited patiently. They were looking for the right moment. 4/ As soon as Kim passed the ball to Urbik, Lautaro stepped in. His pressure wasn’t random – he pushed Urbik into one passing option. 5/ Lautaro wanted Urbik to play the ball to Eric Dier. That’s exactly what Inter were waiting for. The whole pressing plan was built around this. 6/ Why Dier? Because he’s right-footed but playing on the left. He’s not comfortable using his left foot under pressure. 7/ When Dier received the ball, he hesitated and lost time. Inter immediately closed in and shut down his passing lanes. 8/ Inter kept creating 3v2 or 4v3 overloads near the ball. Thanks to the directed pressing, they always had one extra player in that zone. 9/ Bayern couldn’t build effectively from the back. This is the Basketball Rondo passing drill. We have this in the activities library. (Download more games like this here➡️ This is a great game for passing under pressure. Four players are in a small space, like you see in the video, with three defenders. The defense has to get a steal in order to go on offense. The offense has to make 10 passes in a row to win the game. Coaches can change the space the players operate in, adjust the number of players in the game, and even combine their principles of play into it. For example, you could apply “zero-second decisions,” where players must pass immediately upon catching it, or it’s a turnover.
