Smith, to cover tracks, casually asks Exley if he’s heard Jack mention “Rollo Tomassi.” Exley instantly realizes: only the killer could know that name. It outs Smith as Jack’s murderer (and the big corrupt mastermind). Later, Exley calls Smith “Rollo Tomassi” and shoots him in the back.

My son started watching it with me once and then I explained the Rollo Tomassi significance he rewatched the entire movie and was like, "Whoa! That was awesome how they did that." 👍

I always love how you can see the realization in Guy Pearce's eyes. Such an awesome twist to the story bc otherwise they'd have been chasing dead ends forever.
