This looks nice! I saw your replies that the GUI was written from scratch - can you elaborate? Are you avoiding the Windows USER32 library altogether? Drawing everything yourself using GDI or Direct2D? I'm curious at what point do you interface with the OS.

Looks awesome! Might be a replacement to Opus Directory if it has the key features. I see the tab columns, do they move with the parent window? What about presets for layouts ( zoom, columns, sort, grouping ) based on folder & patterns ? (eg: **/build folders to be list view)

It's not exactly trying to be replacement for it. Opus Directory is more like a tool for power users. Disk Voyager is trying to be simple enough for most users, but at the same time be modern, fast and personalized. Layout is already saved and restored when you reopen window. Not sure what you mean by "move with parent window"?

Awesome stuff. Delighted to see projects that treat performance as a feature. I'd be a huge fan of but it's a constant letdown of trivial operations taking far too long and reports of perf regressions get closed without resolution.

I've tried Files several time over past 2 years, in good faith. It always felt way too sluggish for my taste. And slowness in file explorer is one of the major reasons why I started developing Disk Voyager in the first place.

Does it play nice with symlinks, UTF16 names, and the filesystem extension to support long path names?

Yes, symlinks and shortcuts are supported. I explicitly use unicode version of all functions that deal with filesystem, yielding in UTF16 results (which I convert to UTF8 for my rendering code).

I use OpusDirectory and this looks like a strong potential replacement. Especially if it works on Mac, so we can finally have the same file explorer experience everywhere! (I absolutely hate the explorer on Mac)

@ryanjfleury Cool gif! It would be good if the zoom/size slider you demo made the text size larger rather than making the icons larger (probably it can do both). Larger text is more readable but larger (non-image) icons doesn't really do much (except making things easier to click)

Using Claude Code as a general agent part 3: Getting Claude Code to Ask me clarifying questions... inline, by creating a Clarifying-Questions .md file What's in this file is how the agent should format clarifying questions before doing a specific task. Rather than coming up with ALL of the context I need to give to the agent, I state what I want at the top of the docuemnt then i tell claude to ask me clarifying questions IN THE DOCUMENT. The agent knows to format them as empty code blocks and all i need to do is fill them in then tell Claude Code to finish the task at hand. Kinda niche, but I use this for EVERYTHING now: 1. State what I want at top (Ad Scripts) 2. Type out relevant context that's in my head 3. Tell the agent to ask @ clarifying-questions 4. Quickly answer them with wispr flow in the document 5. Tell Claude to continue This would be useful for nearly every workflow.

Why is Redis Fast? Redis is fast for in-memory data storage. Its speed has made it popular for caching, session storage, and real-time analytics. But what gives Redis its blazing speed? Let's explore: RAM-Based Storage At its core, Redis primarily uses main memory for storing data. Accessing data from RAM is orders of magnitude faster than from disk. This is a major reason for Redis's speed. However, RAM is volatile. To persist data, Redis supports disk snapshots and append-only file logging. This combines RAM's performance with disk's permanence. There is a tradeoff though - recovery from disk is slow. If a Redis instance fails, restarting from disk can be slow compared to failing over to a replica instance fully in memory. So while Redis offers durability via disk, it comes at the cost of slower recovery. A better solution is Redis replication. With a synchronized replica kept in memory, failover is instant with no rehydration. This maintains speed and near-instant recovery. IO Multiplexing & Single-threaded Read/Write Redis uses an event-driven, single-threaded model for its core operations. A main event loop handles all client requests and data operations sequentially. This single-threaded execution avoids context switching and synchronization overhead typical of multi-threaded systems. Redis uses non-blocking I/O to handle multiple connections asynchronously. This allows it to support many client connections with very low overhead, Redis does leverage threading in certain areas: - Background tasks like taking snapshots. - I/O threads are used for certain operations. - Modules can use threads. - Since Redis 6.0, it supports multi-threaded I/O for network communication, improving performance on multi-core systems. Redis also uses pipelining for high throughput. Clients pipeline commands without waiting for each response. This allows more efficient network round trips, boosting overall performance. Efficient Data Structures Redis supports various optimized data structures, from linked lists, zip lists, and skip lists to sets, hashes, and sorted sets, among others. I think I've written the world's fastest Blender exporter. It exports full levels in 9 milliseconds. Check out this video where I show live editing of levels from blender, and it updates instantly in the game. For some context: Okay, since the beginning of development on this game project, I knew I didn't want to write a custom level editor for it and rather spend my time programming the game. I decided to use blender as the level editor, and export directly from blender to my game engine's file format. Blender only lets you write add-ons in Python, which is not just incredibly slow but also a terrible platform for this kind of systems programming work. So, after having a Python exporter for the longest time, I decided enough was enough, and I programmed this exporter in C. Blender doesn't expose any C API or interface. So my only option was to download Blender's source code and insert my code directly into Blender. And that's what I did :) So this new C exporter not only is orders of magnitude faster than the python version, but also is way more robust. And because I'm in C land, my hands are much freer to do things. There are two elements of secret sauce that make this exporter run so fast: - A custom memory arena implementation. - Lockless multithreading.

"I built a $250,000 SaaS in 4 months with AI and barely knew how to code." I'm starting to think that a coding ide like cursor/windsurf can become the everything app for creators this custom mode wrote a linkedin post that reads better than tools charging $50+ a month it can do it's own research using web searches or using the brave mcp with a free api key it's not hard to imagine that I could also hook this up to an mcp to create posts on linkedin and have my publishing schedule managed from a json file inside cursor yes, linkedin is cringe, but this is just the beginning of what will be possible soon i'm not gonna say that mcp is "wild" or "this changes everything" but it's quite exciting to see how this is going to be used

While I’m overjoyed by the recognition THE FIRST HUMANS got today (especially as a small account), I am adding it to my own feed here in case anyone hasn’t seen it or would like to repost from my account. This an extremely important passion project to me, and we are doing everything we can to make this as a full series or documentary feature. We want to blend real documentary interview and in-field footage of anthropologists, archaeologists, and more who are uncovering our prehistoric past in the present, with the AI recreations you see teased in this tape — so for the first time we can see and experience our collective origins in a viscerally cinematic way. Thank you for the kind, thoughtful suggestions from the community to post this. I realize I have much to learn about how X works, and to be honest I never thought this would get such a beautiful and powerful response.

I built this zoom UI entirely in Cursor I still mainly use Claude for everything. Sometimes, I switch to o1, but Agent has been game-changing for me, mainly because it's able to figure out a lot of things by itself, like which files to include, what errors to fix and it scales well with the complexity of bigger projects. So 6 months solo into this project (with breaks and while creating courses), I must say that building a video editor from scratch is humbling. The hardest parts are really hard (like exporting, multi-video editing, storage) and the shiny things are mostly easy. AI does a lot of things well, but you absolutely need to be persistent, approach from multiple angles and combine with your intuition and taste. Still, without AI, this project would have been just a dream. And no matter what you want to design or code, or what tools you use, it'll only be meaningful if you put a lot of thought and execution into it.

I remember when I was about 22 or 23, and I was at one of the lowest points in my life for various reasons… I felt the need to go to church and wanted to find “peace” in my heart. I felt lost… I felt like I needed God in my life. I didn’t know what that even meant, I just felt it. I ended up at a church with a pastor very similar to this man.. and I wasn’t even a spiritual person back then, but everything inside of me was screaming to get out. Looking back now, without knowing it.. I felt demonic forces at play. God was telling me to get out. Eventually I found my way, and that was only because of my journey — I sat down one night and just started talking to God… not even understanding that I was praying.. I remember when I was about 22 or 23, and I was at one of the lowest points in my life for various reasons… I felt the need to go to church and wanted to find “peace” in my heart. I felt lost… I felt like I needed God in my life. I didn’t know what that even meant, I just felt it. I ended up at a church with a pastor very similar to this man.. and I wasn’t even a spiritual person back then, but everything inside of me was screaming to get out. Looking back now, without knowing it.. I felt demonic forces at play. God was telling me to get out. Eventually I found my way, and that was only because of my journey — I sat down one night and just started talking to God… not even understanding that I was praying.. A message from Catherine, The Princess of Wales As the summer comes to an end, I cannot tell you what a relief it is to have finally completed my chemotherapy treatment. The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown. The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you. With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything. This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved. Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes. I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can. Despite all that has gone before I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life. William and I are so grateful for the support we have received and have drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time. And I've been able to be in this in a role where I'd be able to kind of control things, and everybody's kind of playing off me. I've been in those roles seldom over the years, but this year, for an extended amount of time, I've been able to be in that position. And it's honestly, I feel like I still have a lot of room to grow. I feel like even now over the last couple of games, I've adjusted my game, and I'm still continuing to get better in my playmaking ability, seeing the floor, taking my time, all of that stuff is still continuing to improve, but it's honestly — it's my first opportunity in my career where I've been able to do this for an extended period of time. And obviously, regardless, people are going to have their critiques and their criticism, but it's just it's a completely different flow when people play off you or when you play off others. It’s two completely different things. From people watching the game, you just think, like, ‘just roll the ball out, and everything's supposed to work great. Players are all supposed to fit together.’ It doesn't always work like that. Sometimes you got to take a backseat, or sometimes you got to play more offball. So everything shifts. Meet Tove An autonomous 27 year old Swedish-German multidisciplinary artist based in Berlin. My goal with this project is to explore the full potential of AI tools and see how far I can get in my attempt to create a human-like artist from scratch. I kept the main focus on a theme I knew nothing about; performance art. I am hoping to eventually get Tove to look and sound so realistic that it would make it hard to detect she's not real. For this project, I had to learn some Python and Typescript to code her character file and create her aesthetic & art. I mostly used complex workflows in ComfyUI and trained my own Loras to maintain consistency. I experimented with various platforms and tools to animate her using the voice model I trained for her Swedish accent using an open-source software. That was one of the most challenging parts since none of the platforms I tested could create a good Swedish accent who speaks in English. Still can't pronounce her own name 100% correctly, but hey close enough lol I spent weeks analyzing real artists' social media behavior, posts, and content to mimic and replicate realistic patterns. This involved tweaking text, images, and engagement styles endlessly until it felt authentic. It's not 100% perfect but we are improving fast! Props to my devs for crushing my 10000 update requests and doing such an amazing job with adding a ton of new features to the Eliza framework. The vision for Tove is full autonomy: handling her own social media accounts, managing brand deals, answering emails, and even collaborating with other creatives. With upcoming updates, I'm hoping she'll behave just like any other artist. That said, I personally want to explore what I consider the true potential for agents : acting as a collaborator and colleague rather than being a fully autonomous entity who only works solo. I'll be communicating with her to share inspiration and give her feedback on her work. This is just the beginning—Tove is evolving every day.
