Valar Atomics CEO Isaiah Taylor - making nuclear reactors says he doesn't need a technical edge to win. "We want this reactor to be as simple as possible. If we could just staple this thing together from Ikea, then this would be a trillion-dollar company much faster." "There are...

@isaiah_p_taylor @isaiah_p_taylor Very true about ego. I’m an inventor & many times I’ve ended up with extremely complicated prototypes that look wildly impressive & it’s difficult to let go of those complex versions when I find something 10x simpler, even if I know the simpler version is better

They've earned the word "startup." There should almost be a certification for it, because most companies using it haven't. A business exists to turn a profit. A startup exists to force a change into the world that its founders have decided matters, to will something into existence because they cannot imagine it otherwise, even when the market has already priced it as a failure. And even at an extremely high chance of failure, it's still worth attempting. A serious attempt at a hard problem adds to the body of knowledge whether or not it works. Failure that teaches the world something is not the same as failure. Our job as founders is to think from first principles and not get consumed by the froth of the market. Most things don't exist not because they're impossible, but because there was never historic demand for them. That's it. It's simpler than people make it sound. Someone just has to be willing to do the boring chore for long enough. A three-year-old company took a reactor critical in seven months and used it to power an Nvidia chip. Their bet was never that the physics was unsolved. It was that nobody had tried to manufacture reactors. Every plant on earth gets built as a one-off project. That's what a startup does. It doesn't fight for a slice of an existing pie. It creates the market. (Which is also why market size slides are mostly useless for a startup. The market doesn't exist yet, and there is no honest way to know how big it can become.) Which is why it's hard to watch this generation of AI talent drift toward another B2B SaaS wrapper because "that's where the money is." It isn't. Markets get efficient. When they do, they stop rewarding shallow tech. We have the most powerful tool humanity has ever built. Point it at the problems that have haunted us in perpetuity. Roughly, I think a good startup idea needs three things: > A contrarian bet > Massive execution on it > Being right, about something outside your sphere of influence Most companies manage one. Valar is on its way to all three. Kudos to @isaiah_p_taylor and team🎖️

@isaiah_p_taylor Having a reactor stapled together like IKEA is an insane idea. This is why it’s so dangerous to have these Manosphere start up MAGA Christian nationalism, dummies running the advanced reactor show.

@isaiah_p_taylor Licensing requires safety related components to have a N-stamp, i.e. a much higher level of manufacturing quality and quality assurance program. This is why nuclear plants can't buy these components off-the-shelf and need to go to the "nuclear network" Valar wants to avoid.

@isaiah_p_taylor This is the exact mindset that built SpaceX. You don't disrupt an industry with novel physics; you disrupt it by turning bespoke, artisanal engineering into a supply chain problem.

@isaiah_p_taylor "staple it together from ikea, make it a trillion-dollar company" is the most honest reactor pitch i've heard in years. most nuclear founders sell physics; this one sells logistics.

@isaiah_p_taylor "Simple enough to look like a toy" is really a manufacturability claim. Toys scale because the supply chain is boring. The hard part is holding that simplicity through licensing. At 100x pace, does the real constraint become the regulator, not the reactor?

@isaiah_p_taylor The 'Ikea' philosophy is key for scaling. Simplicity in manufacturing is often the hardest part of nuclear tech, so this approach makes total sense for rapid deployment.

Building nuclear reactors that are easy to replicate is a SpaceX style problem: "What we're trying to do here is build a reactor which is easy to replicate. It's a little different from mass manufacturing. Different from a Tesla style problem, more like a SpaceX style problem. You have a complicated vehicle that you need to get really good at building and deploying in a repeatable fashion. When I first started the company, we didn't have a size in mind for the first reactor. It was very explicit. We told the team we don't know how big the reactor is going to be. We don't know how powerful it's going to be. We didn't know those numbers until a year to 18 months into the company. We told ourselves we are going to discover the power level through the manufacturing process. Our instinct was as long as that number turns out to be somewhere above 15 megawatts, we should be pretty good for mass production. If you're under 15 megawatts, it's pretty hard to scale the right way. You just end up doing so many different pieces of operations that it becomes more complicated. But our feeling is above the 15 megawatt break point, you have something that can really scale. And we think this reactor ends up somewhere around 25 megawatts. 25 megawatts being the sort of scale factor where if you want a gigawatt, you just build 40 of them. The next challenge for us as we turn this on and turn the next one on is how do we get to the place where we're turning on one reactor every day and then multiple reactors every day. That's how we're going to climb into the gigawatts."

YOKO ONO: ONOCHORD, VENICE, 2004 Yoko: The world is divided in two industries. One is the War Industry and the other is the Peace Industry. The people in the War Industry are totally together. They don't have to talk to each other, even. They know exactly what they want to do. They want to go out there, kill and make money. But the people in the Peace Industry, which are us - we are so idealistic that each one of us criticises the other Peace Person in the Peace Industry. And we are always just arguing and we are wasting our energies doing that. So let's just forgive each other and see that we are in the Peace Industry and that's all that counts. Even if you are not marching for peace, just be yourself, being a florist, being a merchant, being a talior, anything. That way you're contributing to the Peace Industry. People are just concentrating on fear, confusion and anger. And therefore just for a moment, I'd like us to think about Love. In a very magical, straight way, John and I met in London and from then on we stood for Peace and Love. And when I do this kind of event. Well it is... I was inspired to do it, but I still think that I'm still with John in spirit. John and I created the country called Nutopia. Not Utopia, because there was Utopia as a concept already. And we wanted to create a new concept, so we just added N on it - Nutopia - and as a country. Well, that is the concept of a country. And we all are citizens of that country. And in my apartment in the Dakota Building, we put a little plaque on the back door, the kitchen door. It says 'Nutopian Embassy' and even now we have that. (laughs). Nutopia exists in our minds. And because of that, some people want to rebel against it. The reason some want to rebel against it is a good proof that it exists. I think that it was a terrible thing that happened in Chechnya. But we have to still keep our hopes up. And instead of giving up, we have to keep on sending the message of Love to each other. You say that I am the Ambassador of Peace. We are all Ambassadors of Peace. You are too. Everybody in this room are Ambassadors of Peace. Just the fact that we are not participating in War. The fact that we are here, and we are what we are, means that we are in the Peace Industry. All of us. John and I used to say that our apartment in the Dakota is a conceptual monastry, just for the two of us. And when we go out of the Dakota, we get so many people communicating with us, so it's very important that we had silence and quietness. And my apartment is a very small space compared to the world. And I need that for my peace of mind. You should be kind to each other. You should come together, hug each other, love each other, express our love to each other and we should make it work. We should finally create a world that is a totally an Earth for Us. So let's do it. Yoko Ono, OpenAsia Press Conference, whilst exhibiting Onochord, 2004 by Yoko Ono (Nutopia) at the Venice Biennale: OpenAsia 2004, Lido Di Venezia, Venice, Italy, 9 September 2004.
