The airport terminal at 3 a.m. The empty mall that still looks open, but feels like humanity forgot to come back. A liminal space is an in-between place. It’s usually ordinary, but stripped of people, noise, and purpose. That’s what makes it creepy. Your brain recognizes it, but something is off. The aesthetic exploded online after the 2019 Backrooms creepypasta, then hit even harder during lockdowns, when the whole world started feeling like an abandoned hallway. Basically, it’s the visual equivalent of walking into a room and forgetting why you’re there, except the room also feels like it knows something you don’t.
