Today, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. “Vande Mataram”, the clarion call that once echoed through the streets of Tamil Nadu during the peak of India’s freedom struggle. It was powerfully invoked by stalwarts like Mahakavi Bharathiyar, V. O. Chidambaram Pillai, and Subramania Siva to awaken the spirit of liberty among the people. During the Swadeshi movement, Bharathiyar’s immortal song ‘Vande Mataram Enbom, Engal Manila Thaayai Vananguthal Enbom’ (“Let us sing Vande Mataram and bow to our Motherland”) became an anthem of resistance, sung by countless patriots as they boycotted British goods.
