Today, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. “Vande Mataram”, the clarion call that once echoed through the streets of Tamil Nadu during the peak of India’s freedom struggle. It was powerfully invoked by stalwarts like Mahakavi Bharathiyar, V. O. Chidambaram Pillai, and Subramania Siva to awaken the spirit of liberty among the people. During the Swadeshi movement, Bharathiyar’s immortal song ‘Vande Mataram Enbom, Engal Manila Thaayai Vananguthal Enbom’ (“Let us sing Vande Mataram and bow to our Motherland”) became an anthem of resistance, sung by countless patriots as they boycotted British goods. Here’s that stirring song as featured in the classic film Kappalottiya Tamizhan.

They want to demean the glorification of our national song by relating these discussions to the Bengal elections. In 1907, Bharathiyar translated Bankim Chandra's Vande Mataram, with a notable revised stanza published in his pamphlet Swadesa Gitankal. As a journalist and editor of journals like India and Vijaya, he promoted Vande Mataram. Bharatiyar's song "Vande Mataram enbom" became a an anthem in Tamil Nadu, often used in protests.
